Thanks Noo Noo the guy who did the re-install is coming back on Thursday with an external usb hub to see if that will overcome my intial problem behind the first re-install that the usb ports would not recognise devices plugged into them.
I'll see what happens then.
The usb problem may well be related to the standby problem.
Please explain the usb problem you have.
Given you had a problem getting the video driver installed, did you manage to install that AMD driver?

Okay the problem from the start.
Last year a bought a 500GB Western Digital External Hard Drive worked fine no problems.
I also have an HP Laserjet Printer and a Canon Inkjet/Scanner.
So three devices in total plugged into usb ports.
At Christmas my wife gave me a digital camera and the guy in the shop told her a card reader may come in useful so she bough one.
Had a play at Christmas (as you do) thought no more of it.
Then I had to re-arrange the equipment in the room that doubles as an office.
This is when all the trouble started.
I unplugged everything to move furniture and when I put it all back together the external hard drive and the Canon Inkjet and External Hard drive came up as unknown devices.
The EHD was drive E:\.
Out of curiosity I plugged the card reader in and it also had an E:\ drive so following instructions from guys at work I changed the drives on the card reader to WXYZ.
Didn't work.
Called in this guy who is a friend of my brother and he tried everything he knew and couldn't get it to work he said he would come back and re-install windows which he did.
The only devices that the usb ports recognise are the HP Laserjet and my mobile.
So he suggested an external usb hub which is on order.
He missed the standby not working and the middle button on the mouse.
So that is how I got to where I am know.
I would try a re-install myself but I don't know the process and if it all goes wrong I'm in the deep smelly stuff.
AMD you haven't used that term before I have done three downloads from your instructions two for Nvidia and one Bios.
Tell me where to look and I'll report back what is says.
If I run Everest and click the plus sign next to Motherboard I get an option CPUID in there there are four boxes starting with AMD and this is what it says.
AMD 3DNow! Not Supported
AMD 3DNow! Professional Not Supported
AMD Enhanced 3DNow! Not Supported
AMD Extended MMX Not Supported
Don't worry about the Amd thing, I was having a senile moment...
this is the chipset driver but its a bit old so I would recommend you install this one here

Something I have noticed and I don't know if it is relevant is that if I plug a usb device in i.e. the Canon Printer / Scanner I get the usb device not recognised box.
If I go to device manager and try to search for the drivers manually, the OK button is only active when I am in the drivers directory. The canon software sets up the drivers in another folder called Canon and when I select it to be searched the OK button becomes inactive.
Always worked in the past so I don't know or understand what has happened.
Probably not related but I thought I'd let you know.
Probably is related... Most printers require that you install the drivers FIRST and then plug in the usb lead and set the printer online when the software asks you to.
Have you tried uninstalling the printer software from add/remove programs, unplugging the printer from the pc, restarting, then installing the software first and follow the instructions about when to plug the canon in?
Probably half a dozen times or so. I have even removed the Software for the Canon Camera that I have.
Switched off, switched back on again re-installed plugged the printer into the usb port which is what the sofware disc tells you to do and I still get device not recognized.
I have tried different usb cables, different usb ports, all with the same result.
Have you tried installing the printer onto another PC?
Yes both the printer and the external hard drive both work on my wife's Dell Inspiron Laptop.
It's almost as if the the plug and play won't plug and play for these devices, but the HP Laserjet works fine.
Hi Noo Noo thanks for all the help a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately it seems that the Southbridge Chip has failed, even the mouse is playing up now. This has pushed me into upgrading to an XPS 420 which I hope will do many of the things the Dimension 4600 currently doesn't do.
That's a shame... but new toyz is always good!

This is my first post in these forums. I just spent over half my weekend trying to troubleshoot a similar problem: No Suspend or Hibernate on my evidently ACPI compliant Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro socket 754 system.
CCT's suggestion of running an Everest Home Report and posting in this thread provided the eventual answer. Having the program already installed, I ran it, as suggested to a text file. That's pretty nasty looking, so I ran it again to HTML format and began inspecting the report. It is rather long and I tired and did a lot of errands around the house and came back to the computer 7 hours later and checked out the thread I'd started at the alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.gigabyte newsgroup. A knowledgable poster there seemed pretty sure that all I had to do was update my video card driver, and he provided a link to the latest WHQL nVidia driver. I downloaded it and was about to uninstall my display adapter, reboot and install the WHQL driver when I thought I'd continue inspecting the Everest report instead. I perked up when I saw the following about my rather newish 500 GB SATA HD (bolding mine):

So, figuring it was another wild goose chase (I've been doing them all weekend trying to resolve this!), I went into the BIOS and disabled SATA HD support. Upon rebooting, my 500 GB SATA drive is no longer seen, but my Standby and Hibernate are suddenly ENABLED!
I find this amazing. SATA HD's are supposed to be an advance, a relative newcomer in the PC storage scene, and installing one has disabled my ACPI! I wonder if there is a workaround? Maybe if I get an SATA controller card?? Or maybe if I get a different SATA HD?

Good catch... are you going to send a suitably snotty note to Samsung? I am not impressed with the spinpoints, had 3 die on me this year and you have to return to the vendor for replacement (which means refund since they can never match the model exactly!).
Something to look out for and to ask about.
Well, it turns out that the indication I got from Everest Home Edition that the Samsung drive didn't support ACPI was not really the problem. Turning off SATA support in the BIOS was what got ACPI enabled in Windows, not simply taking the SATA drive out of the picture.Quote:

There's a few theories on this, and it's somewhat difficult to check them out because I can't just shut down and restart, but have to wait a long time between restarts (how long? Who knows?) before the problem comes up. There are a few things I need to try:
Swap out the PSU
Swap out the video card
Possibly swap out the video card driver, but I think it unlikely that will help
Some software tweaks in Windows and possibly in the BIOS

When you look at the Everest summary, does it show your comp as an ACPI Multiprocessor PC ?

Everest has a decent voltage readout under Sensor.
Like most motherboard manuals, you need to be a mind reader to figure out what the writer and interpreter actually mean.
These settings would seem to apply IF using a S-ATA as IDE;
Under Integrated Peripherals:

(the last two re Gigabyte-Raid function are a guess - no way of knowing whether they need to be active or not and no info in the manual)
Under Power management:
ACPI suspend type - S3(Str)

Power on by keyboard -Enabled
PME Event wakeup -Enabled
IDE DMA transfer - Enabled Detect the IDE UDMA automatically.
I note that Everest detects a UDMA speed and your transfer rate is operating at 100 instead of 133.
That HD is a SATA 2 I believe but I can't find data on the mobo support for which type (Sata or Sata 2) but I assume you set the jumper or whatever as needed.
edit: and the standby and sleep wattage figures they provide seem to imply that HD IS ACPI compliant.

It was the first thing I did when I posted the motherboard, outside the case with one stick DDR, the monitor and a floppy drive. Reason I did so was the fact that my particular CPU was the only one specified for a particular BIOS at Gigabyte's website, and they said to use the latest BIOS, F14.Quote:

It was originally for MCE but works for several OS's and can do a lot to resolve the evidently very prevalent problems encountered with reduced power states. :thumbs2:
It can be run as an exe or installed from the exe's GUI, for expanded control. I haven't installed it yet, but ran it and went into S3 Standby and successfully woke the system up after 49 minutes, which I think is a record. I don't feel so bad now that I realize that the problems I've been having are commonplace and that there are things I can do to resolve the difficulties. This tool looks terrific. Not sure it will work for me in this situation, but I'm sure going to give it a try. It has documentation, too. At the site, and also has a PDF included in the download.
Anyway, to update, I've finally gotten S3 working. Installing MCE Standby Tool and updating my drivers seem to have done it. I got the nForce_5.11_winxp2k_international_whql.exe, all of 35 MB all.in.one driver update file for nforce3 mobos from http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce3_winxp_5.11.html. Also updated my Hercules GTXP with the 2007 driver, and sound works after coming out of S3.

S3 works fine. A couple days ago I tried hibernation and the PC locked up trying to shut down. Happened next time too, so I may just stick with S3.Quote:

You might have a corrupt hiberfil.sys file, or a fragmented drive or simply not quite enough drive space.
Space is there. I can try a defrag. The boot partition which has hiberfil.sys is 1/2 full, 30 GB. I'll do a defrag and also clear out the hiberfil.sys. I have a link that explains how to do that (know where to find it). If that fails, I'll just use S3. S3 uses 19-20 watts for me in Standby, and hibernation would use zero, if I turn off everything (including the wall warts), which I do a lot, anyway. In anycase, I always close anything I don't want to lose before attempting a powersaving mode.Quote:

That's pretty much it. My boot process can take 2+ minutes, and that doesn't begin to account for how long it usually takes all my Firefox Windows and tabs to reload. The whole PC can be impossible to use while that process proceeds, and many pages are just loading and loading. Many applications are inaccessible until most of that loading has completed. And then it seems that some pages never fully load, they just timeout. S3 (or S4) is much preferred. Except for the power factor. S3 = 20w and S4 = 18w or 0w depending on whether I switch off the main powerstrip.Quote:

Nothing requires that. Some are open because I forgot to close them (I'm trying to stay on top of that one). Most are open because I haven't garnered the information from them to my satisfaction and want to revisit them. Being open reminds me of that when I see them. If I close them, I'll forget about many of them.
