Have you uninstalled the network drivers in safe mode? Does it then stop freezing in normal mode?
I am not sure why you are trying to get this on the net... you can download the stuff you need and transfer it with a usb stick...

NooNoo, do you mean the BIOS update? If so, can you explain a bit?Quote:

I have the new BIOS version (on USB), with ADSFI715.exe and ran it, but that didn;t give any significant change in version.
Panhead:
You were booting until you installed the ethernet drivers.
So, boot to Safe Mode and uninstall those drivers (should show in Add/Remove Programs)
Then, find out if you can Boot to Normal OS again.
That is stage 1 at this point.
Finally good news. I uninstalled the network drivers, installed the VIA drivers and the network drivers and voila, it works!
Next was to use Live update (the right version) and now the BIOS version is updated from 1.80 to 2.20
So it looks good! Thank you for guiding me!
Next is of course to do the SATA disk....
Just one more question: the BIOS now has version 2.2, but the MSI website says the latest version is 7.1? Should I care?
As to the 7.1 -
It only addressed an ongoing problem with AMD Cool 'n Quiet when running a Sempron cpu (per the description at AMI)
" You're one of many using the wrong bios in this board. 7.1 bios is not the right one for newcastle cpu.
Fall back to version 1.9. That bios is the most stable and reliable for your board/cpu combination.
Do keep in mind however, that you may need to install an older version of MSI corecenter (if you use it... ) because that app won't work with all bios versions. (But who needs corecenter?)"

edit: I'll leave the rest for sharper minds, ie, 7.1 versus 2.2 and getting your Sata running.

:)
I assume the Live Update upgraded to the best applicable version, so I will leave it now. Up to SATA.
I would stick at 2.2 as well. The big question is, does the bios now recognise the 500GB SATA drive?
We will find out soon. Keep you informed.
Rather disappointingly: no, the disk is not recognised. So we are back where we started.
Hi - I know I said I'd back out BUT I did think to ask if that is a Sata II drive.
If it is, jumper it to Sata 1.
I will look at it.
Does the drive actually spin up when you attach it? Have you booted with the Diagnostic disk for the drive to see if the diagnostics can see it?
I went to the shop where I bought the disk. They attached it to a PC and the drive was recognised. They formatted the drive and I took it home, back in the PC and nothing. It does spin, the previous 160 GB drive is recognised.
Are you using the same sata port as the 160gb? Tried another? What port number is it?
You only have two ports... what bios settings do you have set for RAID and SATA? Are you trying to connect both drives at the same time or just the one?
I'll dive into it tomorrow.
Did you ask them about the Sata 1 jumper setting?
No sorry, I forgot. Will do.
Be sure to write down so you can tell them: you have an MSI K8TNeo FSR that supports Serial ATA/150 using the controller integrated into the VT8237 chip.
Thank you. With all your help we will solve this problem!
OK, I can start the Windows setup, but I need to install the SATA RAID Driver during the setup, but if I press F6 nothing happens. I have a working floppy drive now.
But until you get the 500gb SATA recognised in bios, nothing can happen... or is it recognised now?
When you press f6 nothing happens for a little while... then it offers you drivers or requests the floppy disk.
Exactly what is happening?
Maybe a stupid question, but anyway: where in the BIOS can I find if the SATA drive is recognised?
What I meant with the F6 not working: when Windows is installing you get directly the message 'Press F6 if you want to install etc'. If I press F6 then nothing happens, it just starts copying files.
After you press f6 the install starts..then later when it needs the file it will ask you to insert a floppy with the file on it..nothing is supposed to happen when you first press f6
geoscomp you are right, the drivers are asked for later. After copying all the files (and the drivers) Windows is starting and then again: no hard disk
If you check Bios the Main screen gives you a number of options:
Select the Integrated Peripherals and make sure Sata IDE Controller is set Enabled.
edit: images from the MSI manual which doesn't tell you what the Bios defaults are like a good manual should
The Sata IDE Controller is indeed enabled.
I'd rather one of these pro's handled this and I have a killer cold, so my last thing to say is that you updated your Bios and that resets everything in there and so, not knowing what the defaults are, it is hard to do an on-line guide-through.
There are folks here that are GREAT with this stuff - hang in there!
:)
ps: did you disconnect the IDE while you tried this install?
The first menu page usually - where the date and time is setup - if it has found the drive, it will be listed there.
CCT makes a good point... you did disconnect the IDE drive first?
At some point it asks you which drivers... the drivers should be on the floppy and NOT inside any folder. Quite often the manufacturers made the disk for you and helpfully put the drivers inside a folder, which XP doesn't see. XP should ask you if you want to use a driver from the floppy or the native driver (if it has one). Make sure you don't just cancel out of the sequence (easily done) but continue - this tutorial not for your board but shows the steps.
