And you promised us another question yesterday at noon. I waited, and I waited!!!!
I have another answer to this one.
"MY IQ" :D
On second thought, maybe that's the SMALLEST number I can write with four letters...
I'm still waiting for him to say "April Fools!" for saying no to my alef answer.
_ _ _ _
MM MM
If I did my sums right that comes to 64 000 000 000 but I aint good with powers...

M is 1,000.

V
Larger numbers were indicated by putting a horizontal line over them, which meant to multiply the number by 1,000. Hence the V at left has a line over the top, which means 5,000. This usage is no longer current, because the largest numbers usually expressed in the Roman system are dates, as discussed above.
PS I didn't google first, I just saw the question and thought... whats the largest roman numeral and looked that up.
You know, I had to check that since you seemed convinced, and I have learned something more about mathematics.Quote:

Sorry about not posting another yesterday (waiting at clinic) or today (filing expense report). :(
The spelling is why I didn't post it to begin with. I always thought the proper spelling was aleph too, but after looking around, it seems to be accepted both ways. If it is not the official answer, I don't need the points. I'm just pulling my hair out trying to figure out the "real" answer.Quote:

I'm referring to MEGA as a single number, not a prefix, as defined by Hugo Steinhaus and Leo Moser. You can find information on this number here.Quote:

Alef is a hypothetical number. Like i or something. In Hebrew isn't Alef a small number like one?
MEGA? I'm not familiar with that number but with 2^256 256's in MEGA that's pretty large, but it is arbitrary name for a number created to prove a point in the 1970's. Nobody says 10Mega or Mega + 1. It is not used in any Math or Scientific calcs that I could find. In which case I could make up a name, let's say MEGI and say it represents 2^257 257s.
I will admit I did Google the MEGA answer. Alef is a term I remember from some of my higher math classes, but I was reluctant to guess it because I thought the spelling was aleph. I've just run out of ideas on this. Especially since you posted that the total length of the word was four letters also. At this point, the largest I can think of is five! :p I think my brain is just fried and I need to take a break. :sad:Quote:

Adept, feel free to withdraw the points if you like!
I think we're going to have to skip on the 4-letter number thing... It's getting scary the number of possibilities that differ from the original intent.
Here's a last hint then: Not a measurement of depth.
Meanwhile, here's another submission from Kymera:
Find the missing letter
B C E G ? M Q
Bonus point to who can also complete the series with another letter or two.
__________
Missing letter is K.
Next in sequence is S then W.
The letters are following prime numbers based on their count in the alphabet. B would be 2, C is 3, etc.

All right - quit begging. 4 points then - counting the bonus.
What's this googling crap ? Didn't you read the rules ? :rolleyes:Quote:

As for the 4-letter thingy, I'm going to have to go back and scann all the replies to make sure I've caught them all to re-evaluate the allotment of points here.
I'll do it over the weekend. https://forums.windrivers.com/images.../2005/03/1.gif
Yes, I'm sure you have my best interest at heart. You're always looking out for others. :pQuote:

I'm just curious to know what your expected correct answer was. Was that ever stated?
Wow this thread has legs nearly 800 posts
The question is still open, even with all the hints and variants. https://forums.windrivers.com/images.../2005/03/1.gifQuote:

Let's ease into it today...
One snowy night, Sherlock Holmes was in his house sitting by a fire. All of a sudden a snowball came crashing through his window, breaking it.
Holmes got up and looked out the window just in time to see three neighborhood kids who were brothers run around a corner. Their names were John Crimson, Mark Crimson and Paul Crimson.
The next day Holmes got a note on his door that read "? Crimson. He broke your window."
Which of the three Crimson brothers should Sherlock Holmes question about the incident?
__________
Mark Crimson. "Question Mark Crimson. He broke your window."
