El Barto let me start by saying that in the United States (outside of New York City and Washington DC) the UN is just another entity that we pay tax money to (when we pay our dues). There are citizens of the United States that are very leary of the UN and a very vocal minority that want us out of the UN. There have been several times over the years that the UN and US have not gotten along and the US has walked out.
The precurser to the UN was the League of Nations, Woodrow Wilson's brainchild after WWI. It failed miserably without the United States. When the World Powers gathered after WWII it was very important that the United States became a charter member of this international organization. I am unaware of an American Secretary General, if I'm wrong point him out to me. The Security Council has primary responsibility for international peace and security. The UN Secuity Council has 15 members not 7. Five are permanent and ten are voted to 2 year terms. Current members of the UN security council are: United Kingdom (Permanent Member), United States (Permanent Member), China (Permanent Member), Russian Federation (Permanent Member), France (Permanent Member), Bangladesh, Colombia, Ireland, Jamaica, Mali, Singapore, Tunisia, Ukraine, Mauritius and Norway, . The reason for the 5 permanent members are they are the current "Super Powers". With India and Pakistan now known Nuclear Powers this designation may have to change.

There are six official languages of the UN: Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, French, Russian and English. So in the United States it is the United Nations.

MacGyver I believe the debt in 1999 was $926 million. The US agreed in '99 to make three payments ('99, '00, '01). On a side note the US is waiting for reimbursement in total of ~$200 million from the UN for Peacekeeper Activities. According to one congressional report using General Accounting Office calculations the UN owes the US $3.4 Billion in peacekeeping duties dating back to 1992. Or put this way about ¼ of Bill Gate's wealth (thanks MicroSoft)!

Not just Netscape who posted that, it was reported on nearly all major news sites. There have been quite a few mix-ups in all the confusion of all this, but it is understandable. I would hate to be a news reporter at this time or a NYC Emergency Worker.

I also saw on the CBS website that the arrests yesterday of people with false pilot id's is not true...

Yes, the reports were in fact false and all 10 people were released this morning. The guy with the false pilot's license was infact a pilot for a smaller airway that they do not see very often and that was what was attributed to the assumption it was false. In a very odd coincidence, they also held him because he had two id's, both looked like him but they had different names on them. One of the id's had a Boston address and this scared police since two of the hijacked planes were from there. Turns out, he had accidentally also picked up his brother's license and that was why he had two, that both looked like him. Very odd but understandable why the police would have detained him.
