There is a well known story of a famous German mathematician, who showed his brilliance even as a young boy.
While in elementary school, he was given the problem of finding the sum of all the whole numbers from one to 100. For most of us it would be a long and difficult task of adding ""1 + 2 + 3 + 4 etc.""
This young lad, however, solved the problem in his head in just a few moments.
What is the answer and how did he manage to do it in his head?
__________
The answer is 5,050.
The young mathematician realized that he could add numbers from the two extreme ends of the sequence to simplify the problem. His simple solution went like this: 1 + 99 = 100, plus 2 + 98 = 200, plus 3 + 97 = 300, and so on until he came to 49 + 51 = 4,900. Then he need only add the 50 in the middle and the 100 at the end, which brings the total to 5,050.
If he adds the end numbers towards the middle, they will always equal 100.Quote:

Although, I must admit, I had to do that on paper, not in my head!!

(a) 14,

__________
(a) 14.
When spelled out, each number in the series is longer than the previous number by one letter.

Nope.
How about if you spell them out:
TEN (3 letters)
FOUR (4 letters)
THREE (5 letters)
ELEVEN (6 letters)
FIFTEEN (7 letters)
Each one is getting longer by one letter, which would lead to:
FOURTEEN or a.)14
This is a stretch, I know, but I noticed it when spelling them out on paper
That stretch is worth another 3.Quote:
