Lets see, I wasn't even born in 1970, so I guess you would say I'm a Newbie. I've been messing with computers for about 15 years or so. My first computer was the downgraded version of the Commedorre 64. I think it was called the Vic 21 or something like that. I remember staying up half the night when I got it writing hundreds of lines of commands so I could play a cheesey skiing game. Thought it was pretty cool at the time though!
I started with a Commodore Vic20 back in the 80's with a cassette tape drive. It was hooked up to a black and white TV. I think back, and man, what a P.O.S. that was! It took forever to load anything off the tape. It quickly fell into disuse when we got the Nintendo. After that, a Tandy 1000 SX with dual 5-1/4" floppies, then an AST 486SX25 which I completely upgraded, then a P100 I bought used and upgraded from spare parts, up to my present day P2/233 which again is upgraded to the nines. What will tomorrow bring.....?

Well I guess I would be considered a newbie but back in 1983 my Uncle got me a Commodore 64 for my Bar-Mitzva and I was making my own games instead of playing the ones they had out there. One day it broke and that was the end of it. I then Joined the fun world of Sex Drugs & Rock N Roll and became a male escort for Lonely Rich Women. Then once I decided that being a whore wasn't for me I went where the money was and got into construction. After a few years of that and owning my own business I got hurt and was forced to do something a little more easy going so I went to computer school in '95 and I am now an IT Professional. How about that......

Right on man... my first machine was a TRS 80 too! Then I had an old IBM 8086 that my father gave to me (he worked for IBM). The darn thing had a processor, VERY little memory, and two 5 1/4 floppy drives. That's it (no HDD even) I'm a newbie in comparison... only 20 yrs. old... but I was born, and raised to be a computer tech =)Quote:

I got my first 'puter in '79 (OSI C1P) and was in Jr. High School. Flipped burgers until I put myself into the PC world in '90.
I did build Pay-TV cheaters and repaired car stereos, does that count? ;-)

I became involved with the technology with my Atari, oooooh a blistering 48k of Ram, When I wasnt phreaking the Bell system ,I still have my Field phone but im getting to old to climb poles.
My vocation used to be heavy equipment repair. Computer work sure beats diesel fuel and dirty finger nails.
All this and get paid too!!!!

I am also a newbie....first PC was a 386sx/25. I started my tech days by working on poeople's PC's and telling them if I screw it up... don't yell at me... Thank God my best friends dad had money. Every time they got a new computer I got the old one. That would make my first computer a Timex Sinclair 1000. Then on to a TI-99-4a. Then my long love affair with basic and the Commodore series. Vic 20,64, and then the all powerful 128. (That I ran in 64 mode almost exclusively.) Miss those days sometimes. Emmulators are great for reminiscing.......

i started out with pdp 11 n stuff but technicaly pcs existed in cpm machines n stuff so i dont qualify (besides i was 8 in 1980) so i don't realy count

The Navy needed Avaition Fire Control Techs( I wanted to be an Avaition Photographer) But before I could get to A school they TAD me to work on this new fangled thing called a computer. Not you everyday PC. Massive main frames that were enclosed in building 50' x 75' and had thousands of tubes and boards. No drives, It was programed with jumper boards and could only do one task at a time and took 2 days to change from payroll to Base Inventory. Finally on to AQF school then out to the fleet working on F3s, A4s, F4Hs and F8s. Yeah I am starting to feel old. Finally cross rated to Avaition Photo and managed to avoid anything related to computers until the Atari 400. Bought my first one at Macey's for $900.00 with 4K of mem and no drives. Added two floppy 720k drives @ $325.00 ea. added 32K of mem @$800.00 I used a 17" color TV for a monitor.Later moved on up through all the Atari Stuff stopping with The ST. I remember my 1st hd. 10Mb for 1100.00. I donated the whole mess to the Salvation Army. Jumped into the 286 frenzy had a portable Compaq CP/M machine about 35lbs. I have been working and servicing computers ever since. Yeah I guess I have Tech background.

Wow! I grew up in the days of Atari 2600, then Nintendo, somewhere in between there my older brother gave me his old Texas Instruments computer (I don't remember what model it was!) Then I bought a Super NES, my mom bought our first computer Zenith 486SX25, 4MB RAM, 5 1/4, 3 1/2, 127MB HD. I kept the 486 through college and then in 96 the MBD went bad. My boss gave me a "potentially defective" motherboard and Cyrix PR150 CPU, with RAM, to get me by until I could afford something better. My girlfriend always screamed and whined when my computer would lock up (which was daily) and I just told her if she was going to yell at MY computer then don't use it! Finally I bought a new ASUS P5A motherboard, and a Cyrix M2 300MHz chip. Eventually bought my current AMD K62 - 550MHz, upgraded to 256MB RAM and 10GB HDD with 40x CDROM and 10x4x32 CDRW. Wow life is good!

3 years ago fellow brought in 2, I believe they were 8000 or 8800 something like that. 1 was to be canniblized to get the other working. I had a terrible experience as the had a massive power supply with huge capacitors that store one hell of a jolt. I was always forgeting to dischare the damn things and was constantly lighting myself up like a pinball machine. I did manage to get the job done thanks to the fact he had a few manuals and papers. was glad to see them go and dont really want to work on one again.Quote:
