Technically I was a 'field service engineer'-but I liked it much more than being -in house-liked being on my own, on the road, meeting new people all the time.

I am finally out of the retail tech game. 4 years of my life I'll never get back. Though it was good for the experience, I would NEVER do it again.
i started out in sales way back. it took 2 years do show them my tech value and then i quit. i started my own company, got some clients and now design/host web site... great deal for me :) only bad thing is windows support... drives me CrAzY at times! thank GOD for this site of we would all be screwed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Retail.
In House tech myself. Although I wish I were paid for most of the problems that family members bring me to fix. I would be a rich man!!! http://home.woh.rr.com/jermeg/images/shaggy.gif
Former in-house tech. Currently unemployed and attending school full time. Probably will go back to in-house when I'm through.
started out as an inhouse tech in the military, then went retail and inhouse both on my own and local ISP support. paperwork sux so i went back for the steady paycheck. now i lead tech the IS dept for one of the big 5 in the bay area.
I guess I'm the opposite out of the rest, presently I work for retail to get some more experience, and have done some field work. But, I swear I never will do in house work again, unless it is someone who I know!!!!! Mostly because the houses I used to go to are messy looking and the people have annoying kids asking stupid distracting questions and running around all the time no allowing me to get my work done for them. Some places were okay, but I much prefer to deal with the people who bring their computers in to the store for repairs just so I don't have to bear the thought of going through all that again. Sure the pay was nice, but not for all that crap. I plan to maybe do more small businesses in the future. Less a pain to deal with!!!
Retail tech / sales / onsite tech / nervous breakdown.
Customers computers would work fine as long as they didn't TOUCH them. :p :D
i've done field service, bench work at compusa and computer city, and inhouse work. bench techs, in my opinion, see, by far, more hardware problems and work than inhouse techs. inhouse techs usually hear a drive clatter and ship it to a bench tech for warranty work. inhouse techs are usually looking at problems from a desktop perspective as it relates to the os and to the proprietary and non proprietary software running on the box.
Got lucky (in my opinion), never had to do more than hang out with my dad while he did the retail tech thing.
Got one lame job and then went into the staffing agency scene. Worked 3 jobs through 2 agencies, and then the 2nd one realized I was better than the average bear and hired me in-house to support their users and co-rebuild their website. :D
We do technical staffing, and we've got reasonable (and expanding ;)) coverage of the US. We're Roth Staffing if anyone's interested. :)
If I didn't like the company so much, I wouldn't be selling 'em! :D
I'm a retail tech and pretty much a one man show. I DON'T DO HOUSECALLS!!! As soon as I tell them I charge $60 bucks an hour and I may be on site 5 hours the customers find a way to get their computer to me.
in house "Engineer".
I am happy.

Another vote for the In-House Techs
Retail at the moment, looking to get into the corporate sector.
