played with redhat....hated it. setup was great but when it got to the desktop it was just plain pathetic.
have now been using a floppy firewall for about a year and a half. 486dX4/100 16 MB RAM floppy drive and two NICS.....boots up off floppy and keeps me safe and cozy. playing with port forwarding internally and stuff.........works AWESOME......all off a floppy!!!!!!
I've got a Red Hat Linux 7.1 box
just finished installing and configuring it. I use it as my web server (apache is so much better then IIS in my opionon. Out of 4 computers its my only linux box. I like it, i'm not a total microsoft basher, but nor am i a microsfot zeolet either. Once i get more used to it it will replace my win2k server intirely as my ftp, smtp, router/firewall etc. Then the win2k server box will most likely become another linux box for me to play with more as testing before i installed/configured to much else on the main linux box. My main system however will probably remain Win2k Pro
Recently Added Caldera 2.4 and System Commander 2000. But I still haven't had time to work with it yet. Oh well Maybe this weekend

Ive got two different versions of linux running as firewalls/NAT boxes for my home internet gateway, and one at work to separate us from the rest of the (l)users here...

Ive also been running Caldera for a couple of years on a system at home that I "tinker" with every now and then... unfortunately most of what I do is Win2K and Novell so I spend most of my time working with them instead and havnt been able to learn as much about Linux as a desktop (or server) OS as I would like... maybey someday when I finally learn how to stop sleeping... <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
I have Mandrake 8 running under a Virtual PC session.
This works well for me because the hardware list under VPC is very standard and very basic, and doesn't freak out Linux like my normal everyday machine does. It seems that every release of Linux is two steps behind the hardware that I currently have, so it never works out for me and I'll be damned if I'm going to downgrade my hardware for a Penquin <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">
Also, this is about as close to Linux as I need to be, or care to get.

Linux box, right here baby... running SuSE 7.1 and mighty happy about it. The other penguin-baby is running RH7 and implemented as the router/firewall for my house. I can't believe that Linux's TCP/IP is far more efficient than Microsoft's! I'd be more than happy to convert everything I own to Linux if they made more exciting games for it. Q3A gets a little boring in Windows when you have to restart the machine for every level. <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">
I have a 486/66 running Slackware 7.1 and a Celeron 333 also running Slackware 7.1.
The 486 is used for rather mundane tasks as it is definitately not the powerhouse it was 8 years ago. The Celeron is a training box for me. It's behind a GnatBox which does my NAT/Firewall duties and is a great machine.
However, it doesn't play Duke Nukem 3D or Quake or anything like that, so my main machine is still the 1G III.

I've got 5 486 machines sitting in a spare bedroom screaming to have Linux put on them. Been meaning to play with Linux, just don't have the time. Maybe this summer...
I have a Red Hat v7.1 Linux box at home, as well as a Windows 2000 Pro system. They're both Athlon T-bird 900mHz PCs with 256 megs RAM. I'm fairly new to Linux, but am learning more all the time.... Needless to say, I'm growing more and more sick of Microsoft every day......
I have a FTP server running slackware linux, I have a firewall running slackware linux, I also will be installing slackware on my laptop (quad booting it when I do!). I have right now Windows 2000 Pro, Windows 98se, and Windows XP 2481 triple booting. I'll have linux on there soon too, hell, I may even throw BSDI Unix on it! I wonder if Xwindows/KDE have support for the new Mobile GeForce chips GeForce2Go's. That's what I have in my laptop, with a p3 900mhz, it should run linux pretty damn good. <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

I have a Mandrake system here at work and a machine that goes back and forth from ME to Linux to NT to 2K depending on the day. At work I have used it quite a bit but have slowly been using my 2K machine more and more because of the tools that I need on a regular basis. The NT servertools and resourcekit tools are what I need, when the Linux environment can interact with an NT/2K enterprise seamlessly (and easily) I will switch right away.
I would also like to point out that as it stands an end user has no need to run Linux (in it's current state) it's too complex to run for grammas and other end users.
Techies should at least try it. At least for the right to talk about it and confuse your non-tech friends.
Not yet, but I'd like to learn Linux eventually. For now I just have two Windows 98 SE boxes and an NT 5 Advanced Server box.
well i have a linux box but i cant log in, i tried to edit the passwd file manually. no when it boots up i keep trying both usernames and passwords, then it said "You do not exist go away"
now the pc still exist in a spare room untouched. i didnt make a boot floppy im in not gonna reinstall it. It took me 2 hours on a old p166 with 32 ram. think it was red hat 7.1
can any one send me a bootdisk image and instructions on how to fix it?
I just got the FULL version of Q3 for Linux with a demo disk of SuSE Linux 7.1 (?) and this was in the metal tin.... all for $10, at Stop and Save Software (Babbages spawn off)Quote:
