I know for a fact that even legitimate users, such as myself and a lot of the others on the boards, will not want the hassle of phoning MS if and when we upgrade our hardware, and need to reinstall.
If MS are only releasing XP to make what they have lost on the NASDAQ, then I suggest that we all boycott this next version of Windows??

I dont quite follow your logic. Why should you reinstall if you upgrade your hardware? Anti-piracy methods are used to weed out illegitimate users and software makers have every right to protect their intellectual copyrights even if they make you sweat a bit. I dont believe you would complain unless you are running pirate software yourself.

You're new hear so you need to know one thing: NEVER, NEVER, use such ill conceived and poorly deduced logic to attack or otherwise attempt to impune the integrity of this site's most respected contributor. Your ignorant flame doesn't deserve my time but since you're new, I will help you out with a couple of easy facts:
Most of us reinstall fairly regularly for a variety of reasons. I test a lot of new stuff on my system so that I can give informed opinions and advice to my clients. A lot of new hardware and software really thrash a system (like the RAID controller that had mislabeled controllers that led me to mirror my data drive to a new drive!!!). I will NOT call MS every time I reinstall! AND, it is always preferable to install clean when changing major components to make absolutely certain that every function and device is detected and configured optimally.
Finally, I build, test, and repair probably a 1000 or so sytems each year. Do I want to waste my time calling MS everytime I have to reinstall it's product after some dummy left their system unprotected from viruses and their OS gets thrashed? Copy protection is fine. Serial numbers are fine. But don't expect me to waste my time calling MS four or five times a day!!!!!
With XP when you 'activate it' your system is given a Tag depending on what hardware you have installed at the time. Which means should you have to reinstall after you have changed hardware you will need a new activation code, else you could easily 'loan' it to a friend and they would be able to use your activation code, which would then negate MS even including it.Quote:

Just because I dont have a string of stars to my name does not mean I am an ignoramus. However, you have shown your incompetence with your [post]. I have installed, de installed and reinstalled hardware for myself and friends hundreds of times without ever having to phone MS. I still re iterate: MS has a right to impose whatever safeguard to ensure their intellectual property does not get stolen.Quote:

We are talking about XP here, not other MS operating systems. If you read about what Microsoft are implementing into XP then you would know all about the individual machine ID that is being implemented into XP. I know this to be fact as I am a registered Beta Tester for Microsoft and the number does not work on another system as I have tried on my spare system here by installing XP onto it with one configuration, then after entering the Activation code, wiped the system clean and added a NIC, and reinstalled XP. The activation code I was told originally would not activate whilst the NIC was installed. Power off and remove NIC, and the Activation code works.Quote:

Please if you wish to carry on posting on this forum, do not insult others. I find nothing wrong with Sowulo's post and he was pointing out facts.
I will inform the Administrator of this event and should anything else occur in the same context, I will seek that posting rights are removed.
