Ive been using AVAST now for about a week. So far it seems to be a solid product.
I never had any issues with AVG but decided to switch and evaluate AVAST after I heard a rumor about AVG not detecting Trojans or worms properly.... After some research I dont think its true but theres nothing wrong with trying out the competition..
I've been noticing lately that most anti-virus programs are more prone to prevent infection than they are to remove one. Just about any AV engine I've used, when properly updated, will prevent infection. However, once infected they all seem to varying degrees of proper removal. Like recently I had a computer or two infect with the Gaobot virus, which is supposed to be picked up by Norton (which appeared to be updated properly) and it didn't detect it when it was installed or whenever you did a scan. Panda online found and removed it.
Is anyone else noticing AV engines are better at protection than removal? Or am I just being paranoid? :)
I think it is time to put some life back into this thread. I have been looking for a good Norton 2004 alternative for awhile now. My shop sells tons of copies of it and we have a lot of problems with activation. The main problem comes up when I have a computer in shop with serious problems so I have to reinstall the OS and the software. You can only activate NAV2004 5 times. I have had a few customers who have exceded that limit. I think it is really messed up that they have activation in the first place but I can hardly blame them since it was so easy to pirate the previous retail editions (it is only slightly more complicated to get around the current scheme for NAV 2004 Pro). I recently read in PC magazine that Nortons Heuristic protection is very poor compared to other AV programs. I guess the can't sell upgrades if they make a product that works too well. As far as I am concerned the Corporate Editions are the only ones they have done right in a long time.

Every few weeks we have this conversation, everyone recommends the same group F-Secure, NAV, McAfee, AVG, Panda, PC-C,Sophos, NOD, etc. I guess ppl should try all of them one by one and see which they like, because theyre all good. Arent they.....
well weekly there are new threats and viruses. And I'm having a hard time trusting NAV anymore... Mcafee lost my support a long time ago and I've tried a few of the others... but yeah I mess around with different scanners because I have to... because none of them get everything...Quote:

Agree with the 2004 issues so dont use or recommend it, never liked McAfee due to its incompatibility with windows IMO. As was said before as long as you dont have an old system and have enough RAM (i'm guessing 512 is todays standard) then resource sucking isnt really a problem.
Everyone has their own experiences and opinions with AV software, just test them all and go with what you consider the best one.
This thing is, when do u start to not trust an AV app anymore?
AVG is great for low spec systems.
How's about a customer brings in a machine that's acting strange... immediate thought is virus... detached the hard drive and attached it to my techie machine and scanned with and updated AVG... Found a few and removed some and quarantined others.... clear the vault and move on to Norton 2003 fully updated... It finds another one or two and removes them... so I reattach the drive (as that is usually when I am done with virus scanning)... the computer is still acting strange a bit but loads into windows much smoother... Adaware and Spybot find a buncha stuff and remove it... still acting weird so I try to install AVG... extracts the files but after that nothing happens... just about the same thing with norton 2004 and 2003... heh... immediately it's a virus... so I scan with online scanner by Trend... nothing... then I try bitdefenders version.... nothing... just about to give up when I find pandasoftware's activescan... scan with that and it finds two other viruses none of the others picked up... that is why I don't trust any AV app anymore... :)Quote:

I have found out that AV programs will not be able to delete or sometimes even access the system volume information folder on the drive if you are running a scan on an infected system. That happens to be where a lot of bugs hide. It is always a good idea to run a virus scan on a drive from a PC you know is clean. Unfortunately you may not have access to one in the field. Running the virus scan with the system in safe mode has helped me out of a few jams also.Quote:

But they bought that Eastern European AV company not six months ago, and as soon as that happened you had to have known what their plans were. We discussed it here several times as well. Geesh, there is big money in AV and malware products. And if MS does something particularly well, it's knowing where the money is.
The CA products which came with the security update cd (and the firewall is ZA) was probably another way MS made some money while trying to look benevolent. Not sure about that, but I wonder if CA paid them anything.
