Dodge Durrango

My wife drives a '98 Honda Odyssey - runs like clock, and aside from a computer module covered under warranty, I don't anything has ever gone wrong with it. Gets about 20-22 mpg around town and 25+ on the highway. Drives much more like a car than the Caravans, etc., but I haven't tried the newer models (which are bigger).

If you don't need the seating for 7, I would also recommend Subaru. I've got a '96 Outback and its also been reliable as hell. The AWD will take you through anything and its got more ground clearance than most of the SUV's out there. Forester's got different shape but its the same drive train.

I bought a Ford Escape and I really liked it at the time.. When I flew down south a rented a 2004 Grand Prix and I loved it. Fast, handled great, good on gas, a real hwy machine. Now do I really need a 4x4 ? I live in northern Ontario but a good set of winter tires and traction control should do it.

So who really needs a SUV??

People Towing or Off Roading that need to bring 7 people with them ??

or a mom with 3 kids in car seats that wants awd and no minivan becuase they're "ugly". plus if we get on big enough we can pull a horse trailer with it. (possilby)

Then Buy a 4 door Pick up they are just as comfortable and can pull more.

The 00 Durango is rated for 7300lbs towing which isn't bad. Webhead has a good point though. My dakota has always had a couple things that just didn't feel right. First, the tranny always had a bit of a growl at low speeds. A tranny fluid change and flush at 28K miles fixed that. Second, it's a 4WD and occasionally sharp turns (while in 2WD) will make the front end knock. Still don't know why and it's not consistant. Third thing was that it make a couple strange noises while towing. Out of the blue the engine started sounding loud as if the airbox was open. I don't know if you've ever heard how much louder an engine sounds with no airbox but that's how it sounded. And it only sounded that way for about 5 minutes then it went away. All I can really do though is shrug and wait for something to break. I've got the 7/75 warranty so f'it. Let it break :D These weird things don't inspire confidence though..

Been there (absent the horse). Wife's been driving the minivan for 6 years and now she's tired of the mom-mobile and is bucking for the SUV (wants a Honda Pilot). The AWD is a big factor (the minivan got stuck in snow twice this winter), but I haven't been able to get her to go for an AWD minivan.

From what I know, the Xterra is decent, but it doesn't have seating for 7. A bunch of my friends have Tahoes and Suburbans, and while they run fine, none of them like driving the beasts. Anyone out there got an Explorer or an Expedition?

except for the Excursions that have the Powerstroke Diesels in em, those are cool

My father had a 2000 Explorer POS. 3 Engines (One blew a connecting rod through the side of the block never seen anything like it). What about an Armada ??
