ASUS WL100G & Compaq Evo N1020V

[FONT=Comic Sans MS][SIZE=6][COLOR=RoyalBlue]I have been reading all of your problems and the advise given by all - I have exactly the same problem - I have a Compaq Presario 1525EA laptop running Windows XP Professional fully updated. I have just bought the dreaded ASUS WL-100g wireless PCMCIA card for my network and guess what? You come to the end of the installation and the computer hangs. reastaring and trying to install through safe mode seems to have no effect. I am trying various things to make it work and am speaking to my engineer for a result. I will post and positives I get

Today I bought an Asus Wl-100g Wireless LAN Card for my Compaq N1020v
I had the same problem that you all had...
Tried to install. Windows XP freezes.

I Changed the BIOS. I installed all the windows Enhancements from the HP site.
And yes, I could install the driver.
Restart Laptop but no wireless. When I go to the device manager in windows I see my Wireless card but with an error:

"This Device cannot start (code 10)

Anybody who can help me?

I'm running Windows XP Professional SP2.

Welcome to windrivers Daan. Have you read through this thread and tried all the suggestions?

Other than that, I suggest returning the card and getting another brand.

I mean, it must be possible to get this thing working... I hate it when something goes wrong... And I don't want to wait to tomorrow....

But probably that is what I have to do...

I downloaded the driver from the site. (Didn’t do that earlier because someone on the site said it was the same) but apparently they updated it. Because it seems to work now...

Its just that given the number of people having problems w/ this card, there's got to be something wrong w/ the hardware or the driver.

As far as recommended brands, I would say linksys, dlink, motorola. I'm sure others have their preferences.

I had to rebuild my evo n1020v and I had the PCMCIA nightmare that has been so popular in this post.

I'd just like to thank everyone that has contributed here, as after doing the BIOS settings and downloading the HP stuff everything is groovy and my linksys WPC54G is working again!!

Marske, you are great, I have suffered with installing a LinkSys WPC54G card into a Compaq Evo n1020v notebook, with hopeless freezes a thousand times - now the problem's gone, and it works fine. I just installed those OS Enhancements you suggested and the card is up and running. Thanks a lot!

I know I'm kind of resurrecting an old thread here, but I'm about at my wit's end here, seriously.

Laptop is a Presario 1510T though. It uses the TI PCI-4410 Cardbus as well.
I have gone through this entire thread a few times, tried all that was suggested - registry permissions, system enhancement packs (tried each one, for my system, and the ones linked to in the thread), the BIOS settings, etc etc.
System still locks up with a wireless card. Either of these:
Dlink DWL-G650
Zonet ZEW1501
The lights don't flash or come on at all, nothing. Everything just freezes. However, the CPU fan kicks in after a little bit, and the laptop does heat up considerably, so something is hogging the processor while it's locked up. Popping the card out does not alleviate the frozen state - the laptop needs to be shut down entirely.

Now the kicker:
The cards work just perfectly fine - in Linux. Knoppix v3.7. It boots, sees the card, and acquires an IP address. So the hardware, both the cards and the laptop, are working fine. It is a Windows compatibility problem.
It does this with or without SP2 too.
And yes, I'm running WinXP Pro, in case I didn't mention that.

And it's using nearly the same resources as someone else posted, except for the last memory range:
Memory Range FFBFE000 - FFBFEFFF
Memory Range FFBFE000 - FFEFEFFF
Memory Range F4000000 - F7FFFFFF
I/O range FE00 - FEFF
I/O range FD00 - FDFF
IRQ 10
Memory Range 000D7000 - 000D7FFF

Anyone come across any new ideas on this ancient problem?

About the only thing that jumps out at me, not suggested so far, is to make sure you have the latest & greatest bios for your machine most especially if you think this is to blame :) (& I think the fact that linux is ok with matters, backs you up).

The BIOS is an odd thing. It's a Presario 1510T. That page is here. The only thing there under "BIOS" is a keyboard controller firmware update. I believe I installed this some time ago (guess I'll try again, can't hurt), but my current system BIOS date, according to Everest, is 5-14-02. I'll give that keyboard thingy a shot, though I'm almost positive I did that already. I'm semi-obsessive about BIOS updates. :)
I also have the file saved on the hard drive already, which is also a sign it's already in here. :sad:




Edit: Well, that's nice. The system boots off the disk, runs a tiny .com file, and simply says "Incorrect system. Please shut down and reboot."

I tried just copying the BIOS update program and .rom file to a standard bootable floppy, but the update program freezes upon launching.

Well as you presumably sussed out, the last bios revision shown is quite a bit later (9/04, & may well wrap up other update issues, as well), but why the hell it doesn't want to install I dunno ..

I'm stuck what to tell you next .. maybe try disabling a few 'un-necessary bits' if we can in bios, like comm/parallel ports & such ? (as I think we are both thinking its some irq/memory range 'allocation/arbitration issue' & maybe that might help ?) - straws time though !

I've disabled everything I could, in BIOS and in Windows. The only time it doesn't freeze up is when I disable the Cardbus adapter. Buuuuut that of course has other problems, namely, the card doesn't get detected at all. :)


I tried a few other BIOS revisions from the site. Same thing - incorrect system. I'm really quite sure that it's a Presario 1510T too. The label here says Presario 1510T. The BIOS says Presario 1510T. On the serial number tag, a string of numbers there starts out "P1510T". So I'm quite sure this is in fact the right system, despite what the boot disk seems to think. :rolleyes:
And hey, what do you know, HP's on online system analysis site IDs it as......a Presario 1510T!!!!

So I've got an old BIOS, but it's resisting an update????

I guess try mailing 'em here - & see if they can get 'carried away' & reply !!
