I was watching the Charlie Rose show about this last night. The reason we still have an estimated 35,000 Americans in Saudi Arabia is Technology. These guys (and ladies) are trained professionals. They work for the oil companies as geologists, machists and what not. They get the oil out of the ground so it can be transported back to the US.
Saudi Arabia doesn't have enough of them so they have to rely on the US.
