..So very often what's apparently wrong isn't ! ;) - I'd concurr that you have some msblast variant or similar to be causing the message quoted .. (if you have unpatched machines on some local network segment you might still be getting it & there is a variant trojan which can 'block/undo' the windows updates :rolleyes: {as we never looked 'really hard' for malware} )

But methinks starting 'again' is looking more & more 'attractive by the minute' - I'm definately out of ideas ..

Maybe I'll get around to wiping everything one day, but at the moment my research is quite sensitively linked to my ability to use the laptop, and I don't want to mess things up by taking a big metaphorical broom to the hard-drive. I appreciate you can't do anything more than suggest this. YL.

I followed these posts with interest as I have a very similar problem with a friend's laptop running the following spec:
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 1 (2600.xpsp2.030422-1633)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)

System Model: S1800-412
BIOS: Satellite1800 v2.10 TOSHIBA
Processor: Intel Celeron, ~1.1GHz

This Laptop used to run dvd videos well, but more recently has had severe problems similar to those described and I have followed all advice on earlier posts as well. I do not appear to have any malware and a hijack run looked very clean. The only thing I can see is that the processor is running at 100% when a dvd is playing and performance improves a bit if I close all other applications and as many processes as I can get away with. I therefore sort of conclude that it may be that I am not getting as much performance out of the processor as I should be - are there any recommendations for that if anyone agrees?

Would be useful to know what video display adapter the toshiba uses as well.

I was using WinDVD ver 3.1 and also Power DVD 5 with the update patch. VideoLan gave exactly the same problems. Here's a full run down of the Display Adapter details from DirectX diagnosis:

Actually that Generic Television bit for the monitor I cannot get rid of. Even if I uninstall it from Device Manager it comes straight back on re-boot. There another monitor showing - Toshiba Internal 1024x768 Panel, but the Television one always shows as the main Monitor.

.........but no matter what I try I cannot get it to update to the new driver - login as administrator, uninstall old driver, do it in safe mode? This could be part of the problem of course - any ideas?

ok, the folder needs to be unzipped to a folder you can find easily. You then need to do the update from within device manager. Use the update driver button on the driver tab of the cyberblade properties. When the wizard launches tell it you want to do the advanced option...navigate to the folder and windows should then be able to use it.

I did that and it said the driver was the same one as that I was trying to replace. Did you want me to do another HijackThis thingummy?
