Employee Monitoring

It's hard to keep safe. One of my credit unions had an incident back in January where NOD32 was repeatedly blocking some Javascript exploit (a password stealer, but I don't recall which one) and it turned out that the exploit was being served up by an ad from doubleclick which was appearing on our local news paper's obituary web page. As it happens, that machine was used to check obituaries against membership files.

Actually, most of the monitoring software, at least this basic one we are using is like that so I suppose the more complex ones even more so, are designed so the employer is monitored only when logged in, so if you want to surf the web for private reasons, you can log off for that amount of time, and the software will deduct those minutes from your overall working time. If you are paid to work 6 hours and you do it in 8 because you took breaks, that is not a problem, I reckon.

In the past i used to be the one that had to enforce/monitor the net usage(at my previous jobs). If folks were accessing porn sites i'd say one thing. just one occasion I found a nude image of a lady on a network printer (the guy thought he printed it to a printer that wasn't wired to the network in his office--I have to be compelled to it before he have to be compelled to the printer). I took that image and visited my boss and kiddingly asked him if he printed that out (the look on his face was priceless). What a jerk that guy was (not my boss), he was finally fired. Now, at my gift job (at a church)..I don't need to be thus diligent.

Interesting software in itself. That could actually be used pro-actively as a way to inspire logging out for breaks. In another job it would have been a good reminder for me. At the current one, not so much. I work through lunch and am officially on a 50 hour work week until further notice.
