Plug and Play is installed. I followed your advice but cannot find bootlog in explorer. There is something I noticed under sounds. I have multiply audio codecs all with a path c:\windows\system32\drivers\audstub.sys, I can not uninstall them in sound or device manager. When I located in system32 and delete the icon it reappears. I then went to the regsity and located them in HKEY_LOCAL_machine\system\services\audstub\enum there were 11 enteries with the same name but followed by different numbers. I deleted all , but I still get the response as in post 1. also they still appear in the list of codecs I will continue to locate the bootlog and post when found.

When I re checked the registry all the items I deleted are back. Here is a copy:

the boot log file is called ntbtlog.txt and my apologies, it's in C:\windows ... I was thinking of boot.ini... It may be a hidden file. To unhide it, open my computer, choose tools, folder options, view tab and click the radio button to show hidden files and folders.

Frankly, given what's not loading, it would be quicker to format and reinstall again.

I finally had the time to re format and re load windows xp. Everything is working fine. Thank you for all your help
