I'm at work at the moment so I can't do anything you suggest now until I get home tonight.

OK do you remember seeing the nVidia name and logo when you installed the drivers? If you didn't, you need to install them again.

There is also a bios update which may help the situation
go here which shows all your drivers and click on the + next to bios. Download the bios and follow the instructions to install on the page. Please note that if you have a power failure during this update, it can be problematic to recover and your PC will no longer work.

No I don't recall seeing the Nvidia name come up, I did get a screen which said that if I continued I may do something like "Irreperable Damage" which I ignored.

A hundred or so people put there trust in me with Microsoft Excel and Word which is where my area of expertise lies. When things like this happen you have to trust someone and I always turn to the people with infinatley more knowledge that myself.

Anyway I have run through the same process you gave me in Post 23 and istalled both the drivers (no message this time).

NVIDIA came up all over the screen.

I have re-booted after each installation.

There was a message after the second re-boot which was there for a split second about initialization but it was gone before I could read it. I have re-booted again but the message won't come up.

I have installed the update for the Bios as well and re-booted again.

Current state of play - no change.

Will check back later.

OK, next look in device manager
Right click my computer, select properties
Choose the hardware tab and click device manager button at the top. (if the device manager button is not at the top please say so!)
Click view and show hidden devices.
Are there any devices with a ! or ? next to them? How about any with a red X next to them?

Sorry for the delay in replying I'm in and out at the moment.

I have followed your instructions and the only device that has a yellow ! against it is a Logitech Compatible mouse PS/2.

I have re-installed the drivers for this from the discs that came with the mouse (which is a three button mouse) but I can't make the middle button work which it did before the re-install.

Everything else is clean not ! or ? anywhere.

There is something corrupt about your install. I am thinking it would be quicker to reinstall again now that you have links to the correct drivers.
The logitech mouse needs no extra drivers.
I think you have an underlying problem somewhere.

Thanks Noo Noo the guy who did the re-install is coming back on Thursday with an external usb hub to see if that will overcome my intial problem behind the first re-install that the usb ports would not recognise devices plugged into them.

I'll see what happens then.

The usb problem may well be related to the standby problem.

Please explain the usb problem you have.


Given you had a problem getting the video driver installed, did you manage to install that AMD driver?

Okay the problem from the start.

Last year a bought a 500GB Western Digital External Hard Drive worked fine no problems.

I also have an HP Laserjet Printer and a Canon Inkjet/Scanner.

So three devices in total plugged into usb ports.

At Christmas my wife gave me a digital camera and the guy in the shop told her a card reader may come in useful so she bough one.

Had a play at Christmas (as you do) thought no more of it.

Then I had to re-arrange the equipment in the room that doubles as an office.

This is when all the trouble started.

I unplugged everything to move furniture and when I put it all back together the external hard drive and the Canon Inkjet and External Hard drive came up as unknown devices.

The EHD was drive E:\.

Out of curiosity I plugged the card reader in and it also had an E:\ drive so following instructions from guys at work I changed the drives on the card reader to WXYZ.

Didn't work.

Called in this guy who is a friend of my brother and he tried everything he knew and couldn't get it to work he said he would come back and re-install windows which he did.

The only devices that the usb ports recognise are the HP Laserjet and my mobile.

So he suggested an external usb hub which is on order.

He missed the standby not working and the middle button on the mouse.

So that is how I got to where I am know.

I would try a re-install myself but I don't know the process and if it all goes wrong I'm in the deep smelly stuff.

AMD you haven't used that term before I have done three downloads from your instructions two for Nvidia and one Bios.

Tell me where to look and I'll report back what is says.

If I run Everest and click the plus sign next to Motherboard I get an option CPUID in there there are four boxes starting with AMD and this is what it says.

AMD 3DNow! Not Supported
AMD 3DNow! Professional Not Supported
AMD Enhanced 3DNow! Not Supported
AMD Extended MMX Not Supported

Don't worry about the Amd thing, I was having a senile moment...

this is the chipset driver but its a bit old so I would recommend you install this one here

I installed the chipset and re-booted but no joy I'm afraid.

Something I have noticed and I don't know if it is relevant is that if I plug a usb device in i.e. the Canon Printer / Scanner I get the usb device not recognised box.

If I go to device manager and try to search for the drivers manually, the OK button is only active when I am in the drivers directory. The canon software sets up the drivers in another folder called Canon and when I select it to be searched the OK button becomes inactive.

Always worked in the past so I don't know or understand what has happened.

Probably not related but I thought I'd let you know.
