As far as change is concerned, it actually sounds to me like you fear it. The idea of being an independent nation, not being enslaved to imports, not being enslaved to the will of others scares you.
When all we get time after time is insulted for "Not acting in time" or in the reverse, "Meddling" then let them fend for themselves. If we're so bad then by all means, go it alone. Anyone who is deluded into thinking that we would shrivel and fade away without imports is suffering the same sickness. No one gave us what we have today, we earned it.
