Well, lovely. Compaq's first reply is useless:
I understand that you are locking up when installing the wireless Card.
Let me assist you in this regard.

Coming to the second issue at hand the keyboard firmware upgrade. The
softpack SP28959 is the correct frimware upgrade for your notebook.
Please try to make bootable disk with a new set floppy drive.
So basically, in response to the wireless card, it's the old "It's not our problem, we've never heard of it, and we're not going to help you."
And with the BIOS issue, I tell them "Downloading the file and installing it doesn't work."
Their solution?
"Download the file and install it."
:eek2:
Ummm......right.
I guess the solution by the big companies is to basically ignore the problem and hope it just goes away.:(
I did try getting a quote from eSupport.com, who profess to have great BIOSes. Well, they might have nice BIOSes, but one thing their site is missing is prices. Over the phone, price is $70. Ain't paying that for a problem that shouldn't exist.
Edit: Well, just got another reply from Compaq...these things sound kind of automated. It recommends finding an HP service center. Yeah, that helps.
Think I'll take the laptop apart next, just to verify that Windows isn't incorrectly IDing the TI chip in the cardbus and using the wrong drive. Really long shot I know, but I'm out of ideas. (Yes, I've disassembled laptops before.)
I just e-mailed Texas Instruments about this too. The PCI4410 is labeled as "obsolete," replaced by the PCI4410A, so I'm worried that their "solution" will be "Buy a laptop that has the PCI4410A."
I have the problem to.
For me it is impossible to install the Compaq System Enhanchements. On "start" of the installation it returns a Error with hpqnt.dll.
Any ideas?
Thanks guys,
I had the exact same problem on my Evo N1020v with a D-Link DWL-G650 Network card.
Just updated all the XP Enhancements and it worked straight away.
This thread saved me a lot of time and agony, thanks again.
After reinstall of the notebook the card works fine.
Undying
Glad that both Undying and tbbe got it sorted.. Welcome to Windrivers both of you.
Hi all,
at first I was relieved finding this thread. "Yes!", it described exactly my problems and solutions were given. I tried them all, but unfortunately my Linksys WPC54GS doesn't let itself be installed (the laptop is an Evo N1020V with WinXP Pro). Tried the bios settings, tried the HP enhancements.
The strange thing is ... I was running Mandriva Linux on the laptop previously. I installed the wireless card flawlessly using the Windows (!) driver that was supplied with in on the CD. The combination of WPC54GS and WAG354G worked perfectly!!!! Unbelievable.
Any suggestions are appreciated, if I happened to find it out myself, I'll let you know.
Cheers,
M@rk.
In my previous post, I was a bit too hasty. After starting in safe mode, removing some old Linksys hardware stuff, and then try to reinstall the WPC54GS, it finally worked out.
Thanks for sharing your previous experiences in this forum/thread. It got me on the right track.
Cheers,
M@rk.
hi there to you all. I have a n1020v laptop and every time i put a floppy disk in a window pops up asking me to put a floppy disk in. Help
I had the same problem with a Belkin & a D-link adapter. I tryed phoning both companies, with no result. COMPAQ even told me that there was no "wireless" support for the EVO N1020v because it was an old machine and obsolete. Not willing to accept this, I bought a copy of a "computer fix software" from www.errorkiller.com. It cost me €20. I ran the program and when I pluged in my D-Link adapter it worked prefectly.
Hope it resolves your problems.
Hi,
I tried buying errorkiller and running the scan and fixing all the problems but I still can not inset my wlan card withouth my laptop freezing. If i boot with it plugged in my machine hangs all the time. The only time it doesnt is in safe mode.
Please help me , anyone !!!!
Here the same problem with my Compaq Evo N1020v and a Vodafone GPRS/UMTS/Wlan pc-card from Option.
After I changed the bios settings and installed the 3 updates from the hp website it is working excellent.
Thank you all :)
I had the same problem. In order to fix, I went into the BIOS on my Compaq Evo N1020v and changed the UMA Frame Buffer Size from 32MB to 64MB (located in the Advanced menu). This fixed my problem. Not sure if it will work for you too. Hopefully this will save you some time.
I don't want to put this too strongly.... but i think i love you
:mult:
i mean it... i was on the brink of smashing my laptop and pci card into itty bitty pieces until i was redirected here by another forum....
now my card works perfectly...
SPREAD THE WORD!!! THIS FIX WORKS!!! YAY!!!!! *runs around the room like a small child until he bumps into a table, then hides under it playing with his newly fix latop + wireless capability*
Many, many, many, many MANY thanks!
