The punchline was "Do you think its a good idea to give away guns in a bank?" My point was that he asked them to go against standard procedure and give him the gun in the bank. Why did they do that? Because he had a sodding camera crew with him, was making a documentary, and had passed the criminal background check. Damn, techs, I thought the power of a camera was realized in adolescence. In a country were I believe over 25,000 people per year are killed by guns it is pretty bizarre for an institution like a bank which is designed to protect your money so you don't need to have guns to give them away.

I think that is the reason why there was such an effort to boycott. It was in respect for his memory…a memory many didn’t want tainted by a Hollywood rendition of his life.

Still, removing firearms from the hands of regular law abiding joes isn't going to make the issue any better. Ever. We need to prosecute criminals who posess and use guns during crimes. Prosecute them and make sure they are not able to get parole for a long time so they aren't right back on the streets causing more issues. We need to stop most prohabition and legalize several other things that organized crime controls. Then and only then will violent crime (gun or not) fall to record lows.
I don't have the stats handy. In fact they are hard to find. But I clearly remember a large majority of gun murders are from legally purchased and licensed guns.
