PSAPI.DLL error message

Tried all the things mentioned on here but found non of them on the computer then I had an eureka moment! It depends what ISP is being used - probably obvious to everyone else.............

My daughter is using ntlworld - I uninstalled their 'Medic' and yessssssssss, error message gone.

By the way the problem with the IE7 home page can be put right by going to Tools (top right of page) down to Internet Options, Advanced Tab then click on Reset which is at the bottom, it comes up with a message saying not to be used unless IE is unusable but all it seems to do is correct the problem, then go to the general tab and type in the home page you want to use, reboot, click on IE with fingers crossed and all should be well.

Having solved those problems I am now off to look at the new Vista - glutton for punishment or what???????????

Sound advice...

You are going to love vista if your machine is capable of using it... if it isn't you are in for a world of hurt....

Used your fix and it worked like a charm the first time out! I have sbcdsl and it worked all the same. Thanks for helping the rookie!:thumbs2:

You know, I never thought of that - but I guess it's true - I think you may have intuitively helped me along my spiritual path . . . I used to really worry about the end of the universe - it seemed almost as unfair as life having to end, but now I've got it figured out: the universe will continue expanding until it doesn't, then it'll start contracting until there's just one atom, or molecule, or black hole left, and then it'll do another big bang, and start out on a whole other trip - maybe similar, maybe the same, maybe totally different - but our 'eternal' (quotes acknowledging that time doesn't actually exist) security is assured by the fact that in the final / first moments, so long as there is a polarity of isness / isnotness; positive / negative; yin / yang, then the creation will not end. So maybe it is worth staying alive, after all!

for those who are still working on resolving the issue, unsintall "windows internet explorer 7" with add/remove and everything should be fine

(firefox is better anyways :P)

Uninstalling IE7 isn't resolving the issue... it's side stepping it. FF is different and not everyone has the luxury of being able to choose their browsers.

I hope you get the ISP to upgrade their version of psapi.dll... after all this is the root cause of the issue - using outdated dlls.

as of right now, i've been without this error for quite some time. :thumbs:

Following STUINN's advice, I renamed psapi.dll to psaOLDpi.dll and rebooted. No other version of the file was placed into the offending Program File folder, and it was still renamed. BUT the program now worked as though there had been no psapi problem. Don't understand it, but Thanks, STUINN.

It worked because windows has it's own copy of psapi.dll in its system files and knows where to find it.

I spent hours talking to SBC/att/Yahoo tech support and got to their level 3 support (software experts?):confused: they had me unistall the sbc browser and supposedly all the components thru the usual "remove programs
' from the controll panel. This Did not work! it did not remove all of SBC !!I did the search for all the PSAPI.DLL and then renamed all of them except for the one located in the Windows\System32 directory . i rebooted and everything is fine!!!! :thumbs2:

after fixing my psapi.dll problem my computer starts up very very slow - i have to walk away and come back in 2-3 minutes. I'm sure it's because sbc/yahoo techs had me remove sbc/yahoo. There must be some remanants of files laying around. How do I detect and fix my dragging computer. Im on win xp home edition.

OK, I would reinstall sbc/yahoo and then just rename the psapi.dll it installs. See if that does the trick. There is also the possibility that you have some spyware/virus/trojan that was using it, and is now slowing everything down while it decides it cannot get to the files you uninstalled.

Start a new thread in the XP forum if reinstalling and renaming the psapi.dll does not work.

After a computer and connection upgrade I was having the problem of that file not being found. It was frustrating as I am not too tech savvy.

I tried Stu's suggestion a few days ago...so far so good.

Im new to this forum and being a pro drummer im obviously terrible with PC's :) I found the file 'PSAPI.DLL.' in programme files and renamed it as per stuinns post but after re-boot i got the same annoying message?
Any other suggestions?

Have a search for all files named psapi.dll.. rename all of them except the one in system32 (make sure you have system and hidden files showing and select it in the search, otherwise it won't find any!)

Hi! I too have the psapi.dll error, however my problem is compounded by not being able to open anything that lists files, i.e. My Computer, or Windows Explorer, therefore I can't think of any ways to rename my files... I downloaded the Process Explorer which finds the files fine, but the right mouse click doesn't work in it's windows to do the renaming. I'd really love to hear from anyone with some idea on what to do. Thanks!

If you cannot use explorer in normal mode, can you use it in safe mode? The lack of explorer tells me you have a major spyware and virus infestation and the psapi.dll message annoyance is the very least of your computer's problems!!

Thanks, Noo Noo. I am sure virus infestation is not one of my problems, I run Norton antivirus and Ad-aware regularly. I'll try running things in safe mode, as you suggested. From your answer I deduced though that the error message and my other problems may not be related.

I was wondering after renaming the file PSAPI.DLL, what are the exact steps to reboot the system, does that mean reboot the whole computer??? Help!!!

Slickmet, click start, shutdown, restart. Reboot means restarting the computer.

I dont get it, it did not work, i tried the hotfix, i tried renaming the file, i tried downloading a new PSAPI.dll...didnt work and now im missing MotiveSB.exe because i erased it by mistake. McAffee somehow detected MotiveSB.exe as a virus or trojan so it deleted it. What the hell am i going to do???

Reinstall your isp software - the real motivesb.exe is part of your isp software. Then you will need to rename the psapi.dll that gets installed with the isp software.

problem for me, which started when I updated to IE7 just before Xmas, 2006.

NTL and Virigin media (whose Broadband Medic program was triggering the message) were aware of the issue but showed no interest in resolving it.

i do however have a slight problem with the fixes and i am unsure as to why this is happening as i have run virus and spyware scans and i have the same error with the psapi.dll but when i close the error message or click ok the machine freezes completely and it wont even load task manager (so i cant even check any processes are running that shouldn't be) even if i try and run the fix with the message still there it still freezes

any ideas anyone??:confused:

Yes you can do the fix in safe mode. Press f8 a few times before the computer shows the windows screen, choose safe mode from the black and white menu.

If your machine freezes in safe mode, you may have a hardware problem.

I do not know how to get the PSAPI.DLL error message from Smartbridge to go away. I would like someone to give detailed instructions on how to get this to go away. I've read other posts and replies and they are like a foreign language to me... I'm a computer novice here...PLEASE this error message is aggravating every time I startup my computer it pops up.. 1. click start
2. click my computer
3. click the tools menu and choose folder options
4. on the window that opens, click the view tab
5. uncheck the box next to "hide extensions for known file types"
6. just above that line is a radio button, click on it to show hidden files and folders.
7. Click apply
8. Click ok and that window will close
9. On the my computer, double click the icon for Local Disk ( C: ) drive.
10. Double click on "program files"
11. Now from the top, click the search icon and choose "all files and folders" on the left
12 type in psapi.dll in the "all or part of filename" box
13 click more advanced options (lower down)
14 check the boxes to search system files, hidden files and folders and search sub folders.
15 Click search and wait for results.
16 When windows has found the file in program files, right click and rename to psapi.old. If there is more than one, then rename them, checking that they are within program files (as shown in the column to the right of the filename). The only psapi.dll file you want will be in C:\windows\system32. Make sure you do not rename the file in C:\windows\system32
17. When you have done renaming, close the open windows and restart the computer.
18. Reply to this post to let us know the result.

Ive been having the same problem, took ALL of these steps, but it does not work. There was only one PSAPI.DLL file when I searched for it, I renamed it, but now:

1- I occasionally see the error message still
2- IE7 does not open (never has). I click on it, but nothing opens.

I cant find any other PSAPI.DLL files, unless im doing something wrong.
