Contemporaries did not refer to it as World War 1 until after WW2. Before it was known as the Great War.

WWI was not a heavy sword intensive battle. Also, it was a sit and bomb campaign, and maneuvers were not as heavily used as in previous and later wars. His father would also have to have been born close to 100 years ago, which is unlikely.
The real reason is because the sword supposedly said world war one. They did not refer to it as that until after wwii, before it was known as the great war.
