[RESOLVED] Fresh Install of Windows 95 and 98

H/W Config Asus A7V Mboard 128MB PC100 SDRAM STB Velocity 128 PCI Graphics Card Maxtor 7gb Hard Drive Duron 1000 Mhz CPU Mitsumi 24X CDRom Drive and LS120 SuperDisk Drive. The Power Supply Unit (PSU) is an approved 300WATT unit. I have not altered any jumper settings. I have left it in JumperFree Mode. Every time I try to install Win95 or Win98 it goes upto the point where a window says it will start the setup wizard, runs up to 100% and then just hangs (mouse pointer turns into an "hour glass"). I have other cards too ie network card sound card etc. But I have removed EVERYTHING and tried setting up Win98 (or Win95) on a basic config. It still does not run up the install. Please help!!!!

Can't guarantee that this will help but it works for me sometimes. Have you been trying to install off of the CD? If yes try this...boot with a Windows98 diskette to DOS, that way you have generic CD-rom drivers loaded. Format the drive, create a folder called win98 and copy the contents of the win98 folder on the cd to the folder on the harddrive. Run the install from there. Post whether or not this helps

Well...........I tried it out but no success. Amazingly, I was able to run NT4 Workstation Install on the very firt try!!! This is getting mysterious by the minute. I always thought that NT Installs were a lot less tolerant in terms of system configs then Windows 95 or 98. So in short I am still stuck with this problem. As this PC is used by a person who does not have 100% use of her hands, it is vital that when the PC is shutdown it turns itself off. Also she has several pieces of software which require Win98 as an operating system. So please guys if anyone can help me on this one. PLEASE POST UP A SOLUTION. Thanks very much.

I got a similar problem with a m8's pc. AMD 550. Install Windows, and it get 90% of the way, but hangs on Saving System Configuration. Dunno what it is, but I bought a new mobo,.... gonna try it next week. If it's not a faulty part, it must be the user
argh.

Have you tried re-seating your memory, or using a different mem chip. Also, try partioning your drive 2x3.5gb. I've seen windows not like installing on large drives before..!

OK I will try out re-seating the memory or even using a different mem chip. As for the partioning of H/drive, all I have done is create just one 1Gb partition. The rest of the h/drive is still "virgin". I STILL CANNOT UNDERSTAND HOW NT4 WORKSTATION INSTALLS UP FIRST TIME WHILST WIN98 AND WIN95 ARE GIVING ME SUCH A HARD TIME.

OK when I turn on the PC the processor name and speed comes up as "Athlon 1000Mhz" it is on an A7V Asus and it is not a "slot-in" cpu. But similar to a zif socket type of a cpu (Socket A?). Over the weekend I managed to install up Winodws 98. But only after I changed the graphics card to a Matrox AGP. I then formatted the hard drive and installed Win98 all working OK now. But I have to say I do not seem to see a great improvement in speed over a PII 300Mhz MMX. Am I missing any tricks here? This evening I will try to slot in other cards. There seems to be a great amount of IRQ conflicts going on soon as I try to put in EVEN one card. To answere shawnMt, I have not altered the FSB in anyway so I guess it it set at the default Mhz. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Try the latest Bios, Via 4n1 drivers, etc. There is also a new promise driver for the ata100.

Are you using the ATA100? If so, check out the configuration in Win98. Look under SCSI devices.

Don't forget to do the Win update!

OK Guys, looks like I have finally resolved this problem. Lots of help provided by my friend who turned out to be a REAL expert on this issue. Watch this space for the method that he used to fix this.

If you had posted the CORRECT DATA originally rather than telling us your Athlon was a Duron, then we might have been able to help you quicker.

It is a lot harder, in fact nigh on impossible, to give the correct fix to problems via the internet as a hands on approach is a lot quicker and easier way to solve probs.

A very easy way to stop getting help upon these forums is to 'dig' at people.

I am sorry if my last post appears as if I was having a dig at people it was not meant to have come across that way and I apologise for it. When I said my friend turned out to be a real expert, I was not trying to say that people posting here are not experts. I was only commending my friend's expertise. I have nothing but good words for this forum. I HAVE picked up a lot of tips from here. Sorry for the misinformation that I gave in the first instance.Once I have detailed out the solution I WILL post this so that others who may be experiencing similar problems can solve them too. That is if it is OK by you.

agreed on both issues....

while i can install a modem and it's drivers in less than 6 minutes start to finish while the customer waits.... it could take 30-40 minutes over the phone to walk some people through it.

trouble shooting is even worse... troubleshooting a system hands on cuts the time down by 90% vs. relaying messages.

But a simple 'thank you' to the techs for the time they spent trying to help with the limited info they were given would be nice....

I guess my apology was not good enough for you. To be frank, I was so overjoyed by the fact that my PC is at last working that I overlooked a major courtesy issue. I repeat what I posted in my last message. I have nothing but good words for you and a BIG THANK YOU TO ALL who posted their responses. Judging by pga's response he is not prepared to forgive me my first mistake. So, the probablities are the my future posting will not be welcomed?
