Internet Connection Hangs Between Links

I am having problems with the speed of accessing links I click on while on the Internet. I am running Windows 98SE and IE 6.0. I have a US Robotics modem and dial up to a 56K local ISP. I have a 1 GHz CPU and 256 MB of RAM.

My problem is that sometimes when I click on a link, I see the hourglass showing that I did in fact click on the link but if I click on the two, small green computers to look at the bytes being sent and received, they do not change. This may stay this way for 30 seconds to 1 minute before the “bytes received” starts to show activity and the link appears. I have repaired IE 6 and tried a different modem but to no avail. I added a new MB and CPU and did not notice this problem prior to this.

Do you think with the limited amount of info provided that this is a software issue, hardware issue, or an ISP problem? I am connecting at 49.333 KBPS, which is very good for a 56K dialup.

I think that it sounds like a ISP problem. I had this problem with a computer at work, i believed they fixed it with a new modem. Any way to try a different ISP, say a friend with AOHell or something to borrow his SN for a few minutes of surfing?

I don't think it is an ISP issue, I was getting the same thing.

Try going to windows update's site (tools->windows update) select the product updates and look for the "Internet Explorer Navigation Sound Update" it's listed in the 'recommended updates' section. It seems to have helped me, and it's a very small download.

Also I would advise that you do the critical updates if you haven't already.

Well, I spoke too soon. It did seem to work but it must have just been a "good day". Since I first posted I have tried another modem and upgraded from IE 5.5 to IE 6 with no luck. I have tried another computer some few miles away connecting to the same ISP and they connect at 50.6 KBPS and have no problems. My average connection speed is 45.3 KBPS. I have tried connecting to another ISP from my computer and the problem is still present. Using an online line speed test shows these results:

Connection Summary
Number of tests 1
Average Download Speed 58.82 KBits/sec 7.35 KBytes/sec
Average Upload Speed 34.79 KBits/sec 4.35 KBytes/sec

I am now thinking my problem might be in the phone line.

Any ideas?

I gotta say, those are pretty damn good numbers for dialup! The IE6 hanging is just the silly click.wav - disable it in sounds.

could be the ping times are very high. try pinging a known fast site,

Goto Control Panel / Sounds and select the No Sound Scheme. This should see if it is the 'sound' stopping the transfer process.

Maybe you have some extra protocols and/or bindings in your NEtwork control panel that are causing the problem. Could you please post a list of what's there?

I have NetBEUI, IPX/SPX, and of course, TCP/IP listed as protocols."Advanced Options" has ONLY "Enable Software Compression" checked.

On the "TCP/IP" properties sheet:

"Server Assigned IP Address" IS checked.

"Specify Name Server" is checked with the IP adresses of the primary and secondary servers.

Use IP header compression and default gateway is also checked on this page.

You can remove IPX/SPX - you only need that if you are on a Novell Netware network. Don't remove Netbeui, but you can unbind it by viewing its properties.
