I went into a local mom & pop computer store the other day to buy a cable. As I started to leave, I asked the guy behind the counter if by any chance they had a Kenwood 72X drive.
He told me, "There is no such thing, fastest CD-ROM that anyone makes is 52X"
Really?! Funny, I've only been using a 72X Kenwood for the past year or so....
He kept insisting that there wasn't any such thing. Sheesh. <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0">
Fastest I've seen is 100x. Dont recall the manufacturer though.

AHAHHAHHAHA thats funny, you should bring it in and show him. Just because he gets his hardware from a 1992 back alley catolog from the butt loads of mnt. my crack.
Not only is there a Kenwood at "true 72", but I run a 56x. And ya wonder how these guys stay in buisness. Bet he can sell you a hell of a top-of-the-line P-II 233 system, though. CUTTING EDGE!!!
Two years ago I asked my local computer shop for a null modem cable. A salesman who had just reminded a customer to "read the manual" as she left, offers to help me.
"What's that?"
To connect two computer via the serial ports.
The guy hands me a network crossover.
No, I want a NULL modem cable.
He asks "to connect two computers together?"
Yes
This is what you need.
No, I want a NULL modem cable. It connects two computers VIA serial ports.
Him, "There isn't such a thing. If you want to connect two computers, you need this(crossover), just plug it into your network cards. Do you need network cards too? They allow computers to talk to each other." Implying that I have no idea what I am talking about while winking at the hottie cashier.
Me, "No, I want a....."
Him, "Here, Fast ethernet in a box."

Me, "I do not want a network card. I want a NULL MODEM cable so that it will not matter who brings their computer over I can whip their butt at Total Annihilation even if they have no network card!"
Him, "Friend, There is NO SUCH THING."
I pointed to his display model and told him to look up direct cable connection in the help or better yet "read the Manual."
I do not mind ignorance. I work at a University, I am surrounded with it. I do mind an unwillingness to learn.
Do any of these shops you go into have hookups to the net?? If so, find the info on the net, tell them to read about it and walk out the store with their mouths hanging. Been there, done that!
I used to shop at a stor that the guy was a Taxy driver before he went into computers......

And your point would be??? What someone did before full-time tech work doesn't automatically mean they're not qualified...I was a professional bowler....Quote:

just because somebody did something else in the past doesnt mean they dont qualify.
before i became help desk i worked at a dock loading and unloading trucks, then sales men and then a telemarketer then help desk.

Which ball? If you're doing it for a living you have to try everything. When I quit I have more than 100 bowling balls in the basement and garage (@$100-150 each). Just to impress you all with my breadth and depth, I also used to test tackle for a fishing tackle manufacturer, sang lead in a band for 7 years, been in both the UAW and Teamsters, taught Living without Boundaries, Experiential Learning, Relationship with Self & Environment in a University, and had a book of poetry published. To quote you again "I can't decide if that is totally cool or the lamest job I have ever heard of."
