I can get DSL? For reals? NOT!

I just got a mailer today from Pacific Bell (my local Ma Bell fragment), that proclaimed in <big>BIG LETTERS</big> that DSL was finally available in my area.

lol, sucks to be you, actually it sucks to be me, we can only get 56k service out in the middle of nowhere where i live, and even that sucks, its has to be the works internet service available anywhere!!

Well, you could bite the bullet and go ISDN (like my Dad, who actually works for Verizon, had to do, or try DirectPC...

BTW, I have DSL and it ROCKS! (Not to rub it in...)

Pretty much internet thing sucks. Can't get SL. Univerisity has a deal set up so that students can get a reduced rate for internet. all fin and dandy but I can't get that until June when they said they would. So I am planning ont it being maybe in the Fall.

I just moved up to the cable modem myself. It's awsome!

Nix the DirectPC though. Go for Starband dish setup. It's high speed both ways, and if you can see the Southern sky, you can get it!

Nothing is offered in my area...I live so far out that it just doesn't matter. There is cable about 20 miles south in Traverse City and they are crawling (backwards I think) in this direction. I did ask them why it was taking so long and the girl looked at me with a straight face and proceeded to tell me some story about a squirrel chewing through the cable lines and how that set them back a bit.

DSL rocks! I've been on it for almost a year. Had cable for two years prior. Cable was okay until about the last two months...it was down 90% of the time. So after I went squirrel hunting, I called Bellsouth and got hooked up. 0 (ZERO) outages since then!

Before cable, 56k and 33.6 modems for a few years.

It took ATT@Home three months last year to get cable modems to a sparsely populated "rich" area of town, but they have taken countless ages to get to my area, which is middle-class. Everybody in my area is getting the run around about when access will be available. It took ATT@Home nine months just to get access across a major road from where they had it before.

I have also noticed that they seem to skip certain areas in favor of other areas. On area which is right in the middle of an area that does have access, does not have access. The only difference is that this area is mostly apartments inhabited by young people, the other areas are trailer courts inhabited by old people.

What really pisses me off is that they've had the fiber optic cable up in my area for two years and they're still not putting cable modem service in my area. Gee, they can put quickly put cable modems in a neigborhood full of stingy old codgers, but not in an area where demand is twice as high. :mad:

Actually, the squirrel thing happens a lot. I've had to have my cable replaced twice since I bought this house six years ago. For some reason, the squirrels love the insulation.....?!?

You haven't seen a northern Michigan squirrel, have you? Big as dogs, twice as mean, and have been known to take small children and babies.....the ones we have around here are all f**ked up from the pollution...Ever see an albino squirrel? Or a jet black one?

I guess I'm supposed to be one of the lucky people that happen to be within DSL range, except for one little problem....IT STILL DOESN'T WORK! I tasted the sweet flavor of fast internet for about a month, until I had to move to a new house. That was the beginning of December. I've been trying to get the phone company to switch my DSL ever since(god bless those oh so helpful 800 numbers :rolleyes: ) The finally got it connected, after listening to what I told them the problem was. However, once it was up, my ISP dropped off the face of the Earth. The only internet or email I have is at work. :mad:
But I'm told that it'll be back up any day now. :rolleyes:
