Okay, just wondering what everyone thinks. If you had to choose between Dell or Compaq PCs to support in a corporate environment which would you choose and why. Our standard has been HP and now with the merger. :rolleyes:
Looking for the least proprietary systems, they'll be running win98.

Given only those two options, it would be Dell.
Given another option, I would go with IBM's.

IBM's like the Net Vista series, or what ones are you guys refering to?
At my company we have mostly Compaq servers and a few "home grown" ones. I would have preferred DELL because I've found they use mostly industry standard items.
Compaq is all right for servers, but pick Dell for workstations.

Dells have always been a gazillion times easier to work on than Compaqs, but Compaqs do tend to run cheaper (in several ways) which can easily sway a corperate decision...
Dell seems to use more standard equipment, which if you lose restore disks, finding drivers can be a bit easier, plus their support is a lot better than HP / Compaq.

Our compaq servers are still running after 6 years and the dell workstations are pretty bangin'. Our users love them but they run 2000. Why 98? You can get new dells (1ghz, 128mb, 20gb, vid/sound/nic) with 2000 on them with monitor for about $600 american.
The compaq workstations are garbage from what I have seen here at my Co. Drivers given from the net are often the wrong ones, the machines are slow. The one thing they have is that they are easy to work with - easy RMA and whatnot.
Go with Dell. We have used them for a while now and seem to give little trouble. A pretty much vanilla PC. Go with Compaq if you like mystery and suspense!

We had Compaq and we had to switch to Dell due to product availibility. And Dell are much better.
As stated above, Dell for workstations, and Compaq for servers.

When I first came to this company, I preferred the "home grown" variation. This company uses all Compaq servers, and primarily Compaq workstations. These aren't the bottom-of-the-line systems, but they aren't the most expensive. They seem to be fairly stable, and it helps that we (the IT dept) regulate what software gets installed on the PC and what does not. You would be surprised at how many LESS problems you have when the users can't install whatever they want, whenever they want.
We used to buy PC's from Compaq, then get printers from another vendor, and software from another. The corporate HQ decided that they wanted to buy all items from one company, so they went to the lowest bidder, which was Dell. So in the last 6 months, we've been getting Dell workstations with Win2k, and they ROCK! Very solid, very stable. And with the two times that I have had to call in for support (bad MBD on one system, and bad RAM on another), I didn't get the run-around on their tech support side.
The leases on our Compaq servers expire in December, and we're already looking to see what Dell offers to replace them. We're anxious to see how the Dell servers compare to Compaq. But so far, we're pleased with both companies.
Dell Optiplex for the desktops.
IBM Thinkpads (aka:stinkpads)for mobil users
Compaq for the servers, no doubt !
winning combo with these.
Dell Latitudes are nice laptops,
but the IBM Thinkpads are just better,
of course thats just my opinion.
We use all Dell's here. I will say they are rock solid. All of our machines carry the 3yr next business day on site warranty, and they stand by that with pride. That makes my job here MUCH easier. We have a few Compaq's left. I spent 2 and a half hours on the fone with them to get them to replace a cd-rom one time, and that was after the transfers and finally finding the right place .. not with Dell. We try and stick with Dell as far as buying anything else goes (printers, software, periphs), and I will say that area of Dell is good too. They are always quick in responding with quotes and usually have good prices.
We have started making a lot of changes in the server room as well. We are getting rid of a bunch of Compaq servers, and they are being replaced with Dell's. The Dell 2500 series servers are rock solid, and they are fast too. We haven't yet taxed one out in any way.
BTW, we use Dimensions for the desktops and Lattitudes for the laptops, although we just bought 7 Inspiron 2650's and they seem nice too. Haven't gotten to mess with them much yet though.
