Bet you've never seen this !!

Ok,

customers modem won't dial out, says no dial tone. Suspect thunderstorm damage, replace modem and the flipping thing still won't dial out.

Start suspecting the phone line so disconnect his phone/fax. No difference. comes up with no dial tone.

Try it on three different IRQ's,untick wait for dial tone.. still no difference.

plug the phone/fax back in. Just out of curiosity, lift the handset on the fax up and listen to what goes on when I click connect. Bugger me, the modem dials out properly, connects etc. Until I replace the handset.

So, he can get on the net by pressing the off hook button on his fax and then connecting but not normally.

HELP !!!!!!!!!!

Did you say that you tried dialling out with the fax machine unplugged?

For these types of problems I like to carry a small phone handset. Unplug everything else from the line, and try dialing with the phone handset. If this fails, it must be a problem with the line; otherwise it'll be the modem.

Yes, I hace tried with the fax unplugged, and the phone uplugged. Then it's no dial tone time from the modem.The fax and the phone work normally. The Modem only connects when the fax handset is off hook https://forums.windrivers.com/

This is a new modem, I'm wondering if something in the PCI bus is knackered.

One thing I forgot to say, when I first put the modem in, I used the bottom (Of 3) Pci slot, when it was like this the machine wouldn't boot hanging at the verifying DMI part of the BIOS. Now it's in the top slot.

I'm pretty sure you've done this already, but have you tried to add "ATX3" under modem's "Extra Settings"?

I forget what command but I've seen this problem before the answer was to command the modem to dial without waiting. The tone was there but for some reason or another it wasn't being detected. Maybe at least in my case it was because cheap winmodems suck.

quick question...did the modem ever work with that setup?

Paul,
Go to Control Panel-->Modems and choose "Properties", then "Connection" and then "Advanced".
Put ATX3 on "Extra Settings".
It should work!

do you have "Call Parking" or even Voice Mail Service on this line?
I had the problem with MY USR modem when i moved appartment, it seems that Voice mail Service has their Tone Quite Twisted from the Regular "Ready to Dial" tone.
Anyway in my case the modem worked Perfectly after i called my PSTN service and asked them to disable any "sophisticated" services over my line.

It worth Trying...

I checked the link. Yep, it seems like ATX3 adds a busy tone signal detection, but not dial tone detection.
I use this command every single time I have problems about dial tone detection and it works fine!
Paul just has to try it.

About the DOS utility.
I believe, BitCOM does it. It's an old DOS utility that sends faxes and emulates terminals. I'm not sure about the name BitCOM, but I remember it was made by the Cheyenne. The same company that makes BitWare for Windows.

This may seem kinda strange but hear me outi had a simmilar problem with a Winmodem on a VIA mb, i downloaded the VIA 4 in 1 Driver version 4.23 and it allowed me to dial out after the irq remapper was installed, you may want to check and see if the motherboard uses a VIA chipset
