Issue with my monitor
I did a dumb thing about more than a year ago,
I bought a Sony Trinitron 200ES but it didn't have a sticker or serial number on the back...
I know I should have the reciept, but I lost it thinking I wouldn't need it..
A friend of a friend of mine had the very same Monitor stolen around the same time..
Now I know this is not the same one because the buttons are slightly different..
Now my question is...
Is there a serial number like a VIN number on an automobile inside this Monitor so that I can identify it?
This individual says now after more than a year now that I have stolen his Sony Monitor...
Now I'm not exactly what forum this should be in..
but I need some info on how to deal with this...
any help would be greatly appreciated!

Damn I hate double posting....
-
Where di you buy it from? Might they have records? Cheque stub? Card receipt?
If it is stolen, sell it on quick before he has chance to call the police.
-
I doubt that if the serial number has been removed, that the selling party would have kept any records. I also doubt that any internal components were marked with the serial number. Usually the monitors come off the end of the assembly line and a sticker is slapped on the monitor and sometimes the outside of the box.
There are retail places in Toronto where you can buy boxed stuff for cheap, just the serial number is missing.
Unfortunate situation for you. I would give the monitor to your friend and say "my friendship with you is more important than some stupid monitor that you think I stole from you" depending on how good of a friend this person is.
-
The guy isn't wnat I would call a friend..
I know him through a friend...that's all
He seems a bit on the angry borderline psycho range...
So either way receipt or no reciept I am keeping it. Just because he's in a band and thinks he's bigger than me, doesn't mean he can bring up something that happend more than a year ago..
Here is a sample of is idiocy:
"A mistake I'd rather forget" You just admitted being a ****ing thief you *** hole!
"Oh did your little Private Investigator tell you that I was setup"? All the convicts in jail say the same damm thing!
Call your buddy Mike and have him tell me when and where.. This has nothing to do with Mike!
"Why are you doing this now, if you thought I lied and stole from you...Why not confront me face to face?" I already did you are a pathological liar and you'll never admit to it because you probably believe your own lies!!
Robert I know you ripped me off but I'll give you a chance to make it right before I take action. I have a witness that saw you in my room at 429 Lee. You were not even a tenant at this building you were an illegal squatter! You had no *ucking right to go in to my room!! This is a crime in itself even aside from larceny. Do the right thing, ease your guilty conscience, and pay me back the money you owe me. You can pay me back over several years if you want. If not I swear to you that I'll never let it rest as long as I live!!Paul
I think this guy needs some prozac...
don't you think?

A Sony should have a CRT (Picture Tube) serial number on the back of the tube, but this of itself bears no relationship to the monitor serial number. However Sony may have a cross-reference record of what number monitor was fitted with what number CRT. Or there may be a duplicate of the Model/Serial No on a sticker inside the case. Good luck.
-
Have him provide a recipt for the monitor with the model/type. this info should be on the front of the monitor (my samsung at work says syncmaster17GLi on the front). If it truly is a different monitor as you say it is, then the model on the front won't match what he had.

Word of advice with psychos, do what I do, convince them you're a bigger psycho than they are. Lot of the nutters around here think I'm a sychsophrenic (sp?). Being able to back it up helps lots :) :D :p

Thanx guys...
I'll keep that in mind...
In his last e-mail message he said he was going to settle out of court.."I never went to court"
His last e-mail message is as follows..

You may think that you comitted the perfect crime, you may think that you are some slick hustler, you may think that you are above the law that's ok because I'm below the law! I'm going to hunt you until my dying day! People like you need to be put out of business permanently for the benefit of society! I will NEVER put this to rest until we settle. I don't care if I spend $10,000 dollars to get my $700.00 back from you!

Should I report this to the police?
-
Opppps... :(
Well,my two cents...
I'm pretty sure, what that digital monitor should have own serial number written in his videoprocessor. Try to find it using test (or info) programs like SiSoft Sandra...at least I remember I've seen it somewhere...
Another way... Do You know, how old his monitor was? You see, manufacturing date of any of electronic components inside monitor are printed on these components. So, if You know exactly, whan his monitor was stolen (assuming, more then year ago), and most of the components inside have manufacturing date after that date,You can simply prove Your innocent - monitor could not be produced after it was stolen ;)

Yes. "Hunt you until my dying day" implies a possible physical threat.....

A restraining order obviously won't stop a psycho but does give you a few extra rights....

Well I can't get a restraining order just yet...
I have to fill out 2 more police reports stating that he has continued to threaten me...
It's Illinois Law

Hmmmm, had a psycho wandering about looking for me with a large knife before, I didn't even know the bloke, he'd just got my name stuck in his head. It can really get to you, you need to sort it now.
One method I used was going riding with a car load of mates, found him, beat the living sh*te out of him.
If this isn't your style, your gonna have to get him busted somehow.
I don't want to worry you, it'll probably be fine. But you probably ought to consider doing some martial arts or self-defence if you haven't had a lot of experience in this sort of thing. I recommend Systema, it's massively effective (only problem is it isn't designed to cause permanent damage  ).
Don't know what the laws are like where you are, but you might like to consider carrying some protection, I carry my folded Leatherman tool, its justifiable due to my line of work, hard and heavy.
Hope this turns out OK for you, chances are the guy is just trying to look tough to himself and won't actually do anything.
