All right...we need an MP3/File Sharing forum!

Anything MP3/File Sharing related..we really need a forum like this! No, it's not a forum to promote piracy.


It would firstly be a forum to discuss MP3 and everything that plays along with it. Will WMA dominate with the release of Windows XP? What's the best bitrate for MP3 to be encoded in? The best hardware players? What about MP3 playing software? Those questions and many, many more could be discussed on a new forum relating entirely to MP3 and file sharing.

It would also be a forum to discuss the ongoing effects of Gnutella, Napster, Aimster, and many other file-sharing services, the protocols they operate on, the RIAA's ongoing lawsuit, and the future of file sharing as a whole. Is file sharing good or bad? Are CDs too overpriced?

Of course, talk about software piracy would be strictly prohibited, this is about music and the ways we can get it from point A to point B.

Opinions welcome! Scott, this would be a great idea for the Napster junkies and Gnutella geeks on WinDrivers!

well...that would be INTERNET music of course. it must be related to computers to be on WinDrivers!

I can find a good music board...but Internet music forum is what we need

Yeah. Sure. What a great way to get these boards closed. We'll have the RIAA and their lawyers calling Scott! My vote: No MP3 boards. That's just asking for trouble.

Geez, OK. There are tons of boards on the Net that let you talk about that. As long as we're not distributing music, we're not going to get sued.

Let's just see what Scott thinks. Master Evil Ace seems to agree with me...any others who think this is just a great idea?

TBH I don't agree with it either. If you don't actually own the music that you are making into MP3 then you are breaking the law under copyright. As you suggest their are plenty of other forums out there that already do this, so why do we need another one???? It isn't eaxactly Tech subject is it??

"TALKING" about things isn't illegal..

we can talk about Warez as long as we want, as long as we don't distribute, etc.

BTW: what is to stop people from posting about mp3s in say, the tech lounge?

Excuse me, I'm not quite understanding how the boards could get CLOSED if people discuss new protocols. By the First Amendment, they can't shut down a website simply for talking about something that is not even yet considered illegal. If we were distributing MP3 files, that would be one thing. Talking about services and such, well, it isn't a bad idea and, being a lawyer myself, I can tell you The Big Q, that nobody would get in trouble.

Through my experiences on this and other forums, if we were to open a door such as this, it leaves a great potential for abuse. Also these forums are designed for techs. IMO, starting to discuss protocols will lead to discussions on ways to defeat the filters on such file sharing programs. It would also lead to debates on what is acceptable, and what is not. There's a fine line between what would be acceptable, and what is not when it comes to these programs.

I beg to differ...if you're not coming out and saying "Everyone, swap MP3s on this site!" then it isn't killing any body. A simple discussion is perfectly fine. The RIAA would have nothing to fall back on because it's all in freedom of speech, as stated above. And do you really think the RIAA is all that concerned with a board that would talk about the latest file sharing protocols? Just look at a site like OpenP2P.com...they aren't distributing files, just talking about it.

MP3 and file sharing is an essential part of our technology world. Why leave it out?

And besides, it's pretty hard to argue with a lawyer, as listed above.
