How is this going to work out for them? While they arent saying anything too new, this is huge news for a company like Gateway, just to come right out, and be so blunt about the issue.

I think it is great. Way to go Gateway, maybe, hopefully the will make a comeback, or at least get some good kudos for taking a firm stand. Between the Senate, the recording companies, the technology companies and the musicians somebody forgot about the people. Reading what Gateway said, they remembered the people and are trying to help them get what they want, yet reminding them to do it LEGALLY.
I dont like their hardware either, but the fact that someone that large (for whatever reason) is openly backing the transfer of *legal* MP3's, is a bloody good thing.
It should hopefully stop too many draconian laws coming into place, and give the closed minded twits in the governing bodies a few things to think about.

About time too. Have you seen the proposed legislation before the senate to police your computer (or any digital player) for copyrighted materials?
It will kill the industry stone dead by driving up the prices for one, and installing big brother in every home for another.
While I completely agree there are people losing money they have worked hard to create and earn, I don't believe the answer is to put a block on the machines.
I think I foresee eventually a licence that can be bought to entitle you to so many downloads etc.. while there will still be people who insist on getting around that, but at least it will still be down to personal choice as to whether one chooses to steal or not.

Actually I think the "analysts" are starting to figure out that the RIAA hasn't lost money from illegal downloads. The numbers that the RIAA put out didn't match the reality. Yes CD sales are down over the last year, but can anyone really remember any really big hits in the last year? Did they factor in the economy was in a recession at the time they took their numbers and everyone was showing a decrease in revenue? I won't even mention why 9/11 was a factor. In the end, we're talking about a decrease in profits around a few million in a multi-billion dollar industry. How about the fact that the cost of a CD now is almost twice what it was 10 years ago, even though the cost to manufacture the CD has dropped substantially. There was an article that explained how much money each record company actually puts into each CD. Roughly $3.00 is the cost to produce and market the CD. And they thought that was on the high side. That's even after they pay the artist. Why won't the RIAA realize why Napster, Grokster, Kazaa, Morpheus, etc. are so popular. Because nobody wants to spend $20.00 for a music CD with 2 or 3 good songs. :rolleyes:

So you advocate downloading the 2 or 3 good songs and not contributing in any way to the artist(s) who created them?
I don't think that's where he was going with it. If they would come up with a way to download singles at a reasonable price, then I think people who are downloading illegally might start to buy.
I have to admit, I download songs that I don't own all the time. The main reason is that most of the bands out there now suck big time and I won't pay $20 for the one song of theirs that's half-decent and gets radio play. If the artists or the RIAA or who-ever would start to allow albums (in whatever format, preferably mp3) to be downloaded one song at a time, I'd be more than happy to pay $2 for the only song that I really want to hear.
The other issue is the ease of obtaining the music. I also have to admit that I'm fairly lazy, just like most other people who have learned to expect great things from the net. If I suddenly have the urge to listen to a song that I don't have, I'm not gonna pack up my wife and/or little girl and go to the mall that's 20 mins away to buy the CD. I'm gonna hop on the net in the comfort of my own home and download the song from wherever I can get it. Unfortunately for the RIAA, right now I can only get it illegally, and that's just peachy with me.
It's my humble opinion that the RIAA has brought this war upon themselves by resisting, rather than embracing the internet and current technology.
Agreed Milenko the authorities have treated this as a threat to business instead of an opportunity for wider and more cost effective distribution.
Once there was talk of music kiosks where you could go with a list of tracks and your cd would be burned there and then for you and you paid on a per song basis. The internet has no real differences to this concept, other than you burn the cd yourself. I think this more about the distributors profits and perceived job losses in connected areas such as printing and haulage.
I have a friend that produces his own music, and he said he figures about $3-5 a cd for recording, then he has to pay his band, then get new equipment for when they go on the road, pay to get it shipped out, pay for advertizing, then he gets to have what is left. This is a small Texas based musician, RIAA types make huge killings off these CD's.
Personally I agree with the fact that there is way to much crap coming out, take Uncle Craker(only one good song) for instance. $20 for a cd, if I hate it I might get a dollar or two back, or trade 5 for one new one...pay $13 for a used cd then you have to deal with the kids at the used cd stores. Or, I go online and get what I want. With over 200 cd's I think I deserve some free songs with all the junk ones I have from one - 3 hit wonders and their bad cd's I mistankingly bought.
Well I just think its kick A55 that GayWay is letting it's customers know their rights as far backing up their cds legally.

I also tihnk that it is great that gateway is starting to back the technology publicly. Eevn though thier products do suck. I am sick of seing the Riaa and MPA bitch whine moan and complain about how they only made 50 kajillion dollars this year as opposed to their usual 60 kajillion. GET OVER IT! If I download a song and like it chances are that I am either
1. Going to buy te cd its on out of respect
2. Buy future CD's by that artist.
I would love to have a pay for play service, but right now they are way too expensive. One I saw was charging $20 a month for Unlimited streaming (ok if ya have cable or DSL) 50 downloads and out of those 50, only 5 are allowed to be burned to cd. IMHO thats just stupid.
Just saw a commercial by gateway this morning about downloading songs from their website.
