Dove Awards
I don't know how many people listen to Gospel/Contemporary Christain music, but did anyone catch the Dove Awards last night? I really liked Third Day's and the guy from DC Talk's performance. Kind of wish that P.O.D. would have won one of the major awards (Group of the Year, Song of the Year, Artist of the Year, etc.), but oh well, they still rock!

I didn't watch but POD seems to me ,to be a band that would like to be christian but just can't admit it. nowhere in there record albums do they mention Jesus, it just sounds like they do. Much like almost every country album.

Then they dump 'em. POD just hasnt been dumped yet.

I kept rooting for them too last night!
http://www.payableondeath.com/ may offer more info for those of you curious enough to check it out.
I don't think P.O.D. falls into the mainstream christian bands - and they have never promoted themselves as such. But it's members are openly christians, and as such their lyrics reflect that (Without Jah, Nothin', The Messenjah from Satellite).
As for the MTV spotlight, I don't think that this could apply in this case. Most other christian bands that did cross over into mainstream in the past never had multiple songs playing on the airwaves. 1, maybe 2 if they were lucky, but P.O.D. has had a number of them out there (Alive, Youth of the Nation, Boom has just started rotation and I can't wait for Set It Off to be aired).
They've also been in the spotight for a while now, touring with other bands (Kid Rock, Korn, etc.). They have also contributed to movie soundtracks and other projects.
The bio on the website states: "grassroots following drove the 1999 single/video "Rock The Party (Off The Hook)" to the top spot on MTV's Total Request Live - making P.O.D. the third-ever rock band to reach the #1 position in TRL history, with Korn and Limp Bizkit" and [i]""THE FUNDAMENTAL ELEMENTS OF SOUTHTOWN" hit #1 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart, going on to reap RIAA platinum certification. The critically acclaimed album was acknowledged as the San Diego Music Awards' 1999 "Album of the Year," with "Song of the Year" honors going to "Rock The Party (Off The Hook)," and P.O.D. taking home the "Best Hard Rock or Metal Group" trophy for the second consecutiveyear. In addition, the band were included among Rolling Stone's annual "People of the Year" for 2000.".
They're past the point of being a "one-hit-wonder" now.
Their talent is obvious, their dedication is exemplary, and their lyrics have more positive social impact than most other bands out there. I have a couple of their albums and intend on getting them all as I really like their style and what messages they're being vocal about - even if they're not (at first) glaringly christian to the listener.

Wasn't 7seconds christian rock?

Did everyone else miss the last act too? I was watching PAX on the satellite. At the end, the two hosts came out and said something about 18 out of 19 acts had performed and now it was time to "go out with a bang". Right then, PAX went to a commercial, then the next show started. I guess they must have gone over their time and rather than give them another five minutes, PAX just went on to the next show. For those of you that watched it on your local PAX station, did you see the last act?
On a side note, I'm looking forward to getting the Dove Awards 2002 CD. I really like those variety CDs because they give me a sampling of everything, even things I normally don't buy.

In Creed's case, the leader was raised in a christian home, so that's pretty much part of who he is, but he's officially uncommitted at present.
BTW, just to summarize the book I posted previously:
P.O.D. is definitely not a "praise-n-worship" band and should be evaluated accordingly :D

I have heard some of Scott Stapp's earlier lyrics and they were as dark as a moonlees night. From an interview I read, when his son was born it changed his life dramaticly.
As I said in another post, elsewhere, this is a man who saw his own soul and did not like what he saw. And did something about it.
His lyrics lately are unnecassary, the sound of his voice alone says it all. Nevertheless, his lyrics also carry a mesage all their own. It's a mesage I like to hear.
In any event, it is not the genre I care about. If it is good music, I will listen. If not I don't.

I guess Scott Stapp and I have something in common then - fatherhood changing your life for the better following a serious session of soul-searching. My son's birth had the same effect on me

The Kry is another christian band I've been following for a while (the 2 brothers who founded the band are both from Quebec). They're more of a "modern rock" band.
I've see a couple of their concerts and can't wait for the next one (in the city where I live :D ) this fall. Their interaction with the public is just great.
Other christian concerts I've been to include SonicFlood and Rebecca St. James. Both were awesome. Not a whole lott, but it's rather rare for these artists to come anywhere near Quebec.
