For all the Brits out there.
Where do you go on-line these days to check out train times / fares in Britain? What happened to good old British Rail?
A friend who is travelling over there today asked me to check some train times for him and I can't seem to find a centralised point to get information.
I believe they have split all the railways up now into different companies but I have no idea who would cover the Paddington to Highbridge service?
Anyone help?

Well actually where I live we don't have trains! My nearest station is 50 miles away so I don't really know much about it after privatisation. I had thought that Virgin trains came down to the south west so it may be worth checking that out too. Good luck!
That is crazy. What the hell happened to the train system since I left? Mind you I never remember it as being great but at least you could go to your British Rail station and book tickets for just about anywhere.Quote:

The last time I took a train was about 4 years ago. From Crewe to Exeter. It was delayed for 2 hours, then broke down. Had to change at Birmingham where it was delayed for a further hour. Eventually got back 4.5 hours late. I spent 5 years living in Tokyo where you can just about set your watch by the arrival times of trains. Now I live in a rural area where trains just ain't!

Two years ago while I was in London, I thought the railway to be nice. I had no problem getting to London from Gatwick and then to Bath. Nice comfortable cars. The station was a bit confusing, though.
My only gripe is with the mens room...

Yes the toilets on our trains are a real problem. There is no pride or passion regarding the railway system anymore and it shows. The train system here is not run as a service anymore but a money-making operation by the government.Quote:

The London Underground train system is quite simply superb. When you consider how many people they move daily, and over what distances it is quite staggering. London would die without it, and I for one am very proud of it. Yes it used to be more reliable, but now the lines are jam packed with trains and people, a victim of it's own success,(having done my apprenticeship there I am rather biased, but what the hell)Quote:
