Win2K Vs. Win XP

Gazzak and Eboyjones and Confus-ed were making some comments in another thread here, comparing Win XP and 2K.

I use 2K pro at home and here in the office. I don't prefer the look and feel of XP but I have to admit I have had little exposure to XP.

My personal feeling is that I prefer 2K pro over XP but I don't have any reason other than I like 2K, I'm familiar with it. It works well and is pretty stable. Since 2K is working for me and I'm not familiar with, or don't prefer the look and feel of XP, I stay with 2K.

Sounds like other people prefer 2K also, I'm curious to hear peoples preferences and any experiences or knowledge they may have behind their preference.

I also like 2K alot, but I just built a multimedia machine and since the computer needs a new OS anyway I might put on XP Pro. Anyone know if there is a benefit to XP over 2K when using an ATI 9700Pro AIW for DVR?

by the time u get rid of all the silly balloons /popups and waistful graphics ,,,,and tweak the services in XP ,,,u end up with 2k.


i am now using a "tweaked" xp settup ..and only installed it on this machine , to have some knolage when customers rung me up



but i actually thought we all used 2k ,,,,coz it was a "free" copy from work?

Having use both Wni2000 Pro and WinXP Pro, I lean more towards XP.

Not just because I'm a techno-hungy geek who craves the latest and greatest, but because for me it has been more stable overall.

I wouldn't say faster, but I haven't really done comparison testing. Right off the bat I'd say 2K is faster, but once you tweak XP a bit and disable un-needed services (thank you Black Viper!), it rocks.

Exactly. Get rid of the "XP Style" and you have 2k with a BUTTLOAD of hardware support. Anyways.... If it's working for you and doing what you need it to do then that's what you should go with. Me? I have Suse 9 installed on my laptop (puter I use most of the time).

keep thinkin about linux and suse 9 etc for my laptop ,,,last i tried was a coldera disk many years ago ,,,

this laptop has,nt got a cd rom ,,,so i have a pendrive , and if it crashes to much i just plug drive into main machine , wipe it and copy i386 folder over and run settup ,,, and drag saved drivers from my main machine. is there still a self running version of linux from cd? reason for ask is to copy it to a dir and use a boot floppy?

am i barkin up the wrong tree ,,,or just barkin mad?

thigns jsut work in XP. plug it in and it's there. no loading or rebooting. XP is the more betterly choice

I did some poking around looking for other discussions of this nature and that's the general impression I get. XP (pro) is better though it tends to need some tweaking to get rid of the unnecessary crap. Sounds like XP home is a toad though.

Both have positives and negatives. This is comparing apples to pears - similar but still different. 2000 was developed for business and XP seems more for home use. For work I use 2000 and for my older machines I use 2000 and for my top end gaming machine I use XP. So, they are both pretty good in their own respects.

2000 is great for normal apps and I run it over XP any day of the week for those things.

XP is the thing for home entertainment machines and if you want to play games.

Not so on the XP Home impression you may have. It is just a "watered down" version of XP Pro for the masses, without the business benefits.And XP is the BEST OS they have come out with, hands down. Just one example: One customer upgraded from 98 to 2k pro and ended up with nothing but problems (hardware issues, and compatability btw). That same PC is now running XP home with nary an issue. Great stability is the KEY, as well as better memory management, although they are related.

XP runs acpi better and networking for peer to peer better.

There are versions of linux that run off of a cd (Knoppix is the most popular). Now I'm not sure how you would get the system to boot from an iso but I'm sure it could be done. Something you might be interested in though is Topologilinux It installs on a windows partition (fat/ntfs). Very nice learning tool.

I run XP Pro at home and 2K at work. I haven't tweaked it a bit yet, and am thoroughly happy with it, balloons and all. They conveniently have little 'x' boxes I them so I can promptly turn them off.

The first thing I noticed, in regard to hardware support, was the driver for my modem. It (the modem) came out of my old box (I'm talking 1992 version, AT case) but was a much better modem than the Winmodem that Dell shipped with the new system. It worked just fine and I had no problems with the modem. But one day the system crashed, possibly a bad sector on the hard drive, and I re-installed XP. The driver it installed for my modem is much better than the one I chose for it on the initial install, many new features.

It's a small thing.

My two cents, if you want the look and feel of your old OS, then why upgrade? If you have the new OS, why don't you adjust your thinking? A friend of mine upgraded to XP before I did and told me he was kind of sorry he changed to look back to the old Windows style, and so I decided to try the new look and to try to get used to the wave of the future.

Any O.S. that has tellytubbie land for an opening screen is for the children and can stay in the box. First impressions count with me and that screen tells me it's an O.S. for girls, under 5!!

I always go for W2K because I'm fully trained and certified, better the devil you know. I have techie friends with far greater knowledge than me and some of them love XP as much as I like W2K.

It's horses for courses, what you like you run.

I prefer XP. I've just found 2k to be clunky. I avoided moving from 2k to XP for almost a year after it's release for fear of another ME incident. But as we sold more and more computers with XP on it, I gradually became used to the "candy" interface (which I disable almost completely now). XP just seems more "rounded". And it seems to boot faster and smoother. I've only had 8 blue screens in windows XP where I've had numerous with 2k on the same computers.
