hey..
a friend of mine bought a new computer with intel 915 chipset and a pentium4 3.0ghz with hyper threding.
sisoft sandra tells cpu temp to be 60 degrees celsius - this is right after staring the pc - no special gaming or multimedia actions taken before..
is this normal ??...
i know the before HT, 40-50 degrees is normal not 60.

Vulcan, does the temperature readout in the BIOS report the same temperature as Sandra at startup, and later? I am just a little suspicious of Sandra's accuracy in reporting temperature. But if the BIOS report also starts out showing that high, but doesn't rise too much further, I'd suspect a temperature sensing problem. Sometimes a BIOS update can correct an incorrect temperature reading issue.
Also, with a P4, if the chip is running hot, you can notice a performance reduction as the on-chip sensor will start idling the CPU for an increasing proportion of the time to limit temperature rise.
Another possibility is, if this is a really new system, ie not burned in, the CPU can run at an elevated temperature if it is using a stock cooler with a thermal phase-change pad. It will take a while for the thermally conductive material to "settle" and form a micro-thickness bond, after which the CPU temperature also settles to the normal lower temperature range you have spoken of.
the bios did report the same temperature..
and as for the feature you mentioned about idling the cpu..i think this feature only exists in th 6xx series and this is a 530 cpu.
Northwood and Prescott cores have the throttling feature, so it's been around for a while.

but we digress...what do i do about the 60 degrees ??...fan is working properly..
The newer series is of course more advanced, but maybe I didn't make quite clear what I meant. I was considering whether the board's monitor may be reporting an incorrectly high temperature, and noting that if the CPU is genuinely overheating you could notice the result of the throttling coming into action. This could be one clue as to whether the temperature report is false.
If the system is turned off for long enough to cool to room temperature, say 26C, and you switch the system on, go immediately to the BIOS temperature monitor and it says 60C and stays around that, I'd say the board is reading wrong. The system should be returned for warranty attention in this case, even though it may only need, say, a BIOS update.
If the temperature report starts low, eg 30C and quickly rises to 60C and beyond, I would suspect there is a problem with the contact between the CPU cap and the base of the cooler, eg a piece of grit or something. Once again, so as not to void the warranty, it should be attended to by the supplier.
The maximum case temperature for this CPU is 70C, so if the idle temperature is really 60C, it's certainly too high.

What's your case temperature like ?
You can have the best fan in the world & everything as it should be - but if you haven't got good enough airflow within the case to bring in sufficient cool air, then your temperatures will always seem high ;)
It's a reasonable issue to raise, and I agree it would be helpful for Vulcan to detail this. But it hadn't really been left out of my considerations.Quote:

Unless the system is simply in a very hot environment, in which situation Vulcan's question is answered, poor case ventilation isn't going to give elevated CPU temperature immediately at switch-on.

Now that'd depend on how badly the case is laid out surly shirley says surely ? , but yes hopefully not in general, but some cases have practically no clearance between cooler & psu & without a rear fan they get very hot very quick - 1 minute or so ?Quote:

If it does this from 'cold' then things aren't quite as they should be 'ideally' - however if you take it back to the shop they may just look at you strangely & ask just what the problem is ? As the machine is operating & within 'tolerance' ..Quote:

I feel the urge to write a disclaimer like they have at the start & end of TV programs, about never trying to do things like this at home, unless you are a trained professional .. put it this way - I wouldn't be doing this just to prove to myself how fast it warmed up ! ;) no matter how helpful I was feeling - some configarations could have comletely cooked a chip in the 4 minutes Platypus was brave enough to leave his cooler off !Quote:

I found this place on google, because Im having some computer trouble and I dont know much about the insides.
I was having this same trouble trying to play a game, where my computer would overheat and shut down.
I downloaded Speedfan and the temps were really high
the cpu was like 80c and the case was around 70c
so I took the cover off my computer and put a fan next to it, blowing inside to cool it down. the cpu temp is down to around 40 now but the case is still in teh 60's..
can anyone help me out? the fan I have inside is working fine and this just started happening the other day. the computer is a Compaq Persario 2.50ghz 512mb ram and I've had it for over a year.
Somebody help!!!! :cool:
