For people not running an os that supports MS Antispyware I used to use Spywareblaster. Then I found that Spybot with tea timer was better.
However, there is a major bug with the new Spybot.
So I am looking for a free real time anti-spy program that will do what ms antispy does especially in monitoring programs added to startup, lsp changes etc.
Anyone have any recommendations?
What OS might this be? As a rule I use more than one application, Spybot/Adaware/MS AntiSpyware, and recently the trial version of Counterspy, which I plan on purchasing soon.
I use AdAware ,Webroot SpySweeper and i have Norton internet Security Anitisypware Edition.
Another vote for AdAware and Webroot SpySweeper.
I am looking to protect win98 and winMe.
The ones you list are either not free or cleaning apps for after infections(am I missing something?)
So how do I protect win98 and WinMe for free?
For older systems like that, they are left more open to spyware. And if the user really wants to stay with old OS's like that, then theyre gonna have to spend some money to stay secure.
There are a few things that can be done, a HOST file can be used.
Spybot still has a Immunize feature that blocks alot silently.

Mentioned before Lavasoft AdAware works fine for Win98...
But there is not much difference between spyware and viruses,though - quite often what one program recognizes as spyware, another says "virus is found"... So, as an addition to antispyware, I would recommend also AVG and Antivir antiviruses - they both have a free versions (pretty decent)available...
Antivir won't work with Win98, but AVG is a good choice for AV. I suggest Spybot also. Enable the TeaTimer feature and it will give you a warning when a program is attempting to edit your registry.

www.emsisoft.com has what you need to stop the registry being written to - also checks program activity - if it behaves like a worm, virus, spyware or trojan it stops the process and pops up a box.
When using tea timer protection the dialogue box is unreadable. It is documented on the Spybot fourm and they say it is a problem with Borland and they are hoping to get it fixed.Quote:
