Several of my clients use ZoneAlarm and are satisfied with it.
Generally regarded as by far the best and cheapest---- FREE.
Get it, install it, then go to Steve Gibson's page and test it www.grc.com .
Uninstall it, and install any other (Norton, Black Ice, whatever) and go back to Steve's page and test again.
ZoneAlarm wins, every time.

hey, thanks for all the prompt replies!! happy to have some good things to tell clients when they're looking for something in security that actually works. The free part ought to put a smile on some sour pusses out there.
thanks again
Ummm. Remember it's for "personal" use not "business" , okay. https://forums.windrivers.com/images.../2000/09/1.gif
you can use it for buisness but you have to pay for it. If I remeber the cost was not that high.Quote:

My question is how much resorces does it hog?
I downloaded Zonealarm this week, and installed it at home. 10 minutes later some git from france was trying to ftp to my pc on some wierd port number! It really does work.! so far it's stopped over 8 attempts.!
also, I downloaded Neotrace, which with an IP address,(or www address) can locate a pc anywhere in the world, and show it's route/path through other servers, and in some cases, even shows a detailed map of the originator.......
now where was that froggy again......

funny, black ice does this and much more, and is 100x easier to setup.
sure it costs money, but you can set it up and never have to worry about icq/real player or any of the likes not being able to get through. it is also good enough to give you the info you need to report them.
I hardly found Black Ice easier to set up. Sure, very simplified, but it absolutely hated my USB network adapter and checking at www.grc.com showed IDENT being left open. A manual edit of the INI file required to close it. ZA on the other hand, works with my adapter and is a no brainer. Hmmm do I want IE to access the internet Y/N... not too difficult. VB E-mail virus, stopped dead by ZA, got to me through a friend running BID!
i think if you want to buy ZA for Business Use it's something like $30. For personal use it's free.
Last I checked it was about $19 for business use although it may have gone up. It uses very little resources and it a very compact program. I ran BlackIce for about 6 months but got tired of the bugs, not serious bugs, just annoying, although running BI after it crashed was not an option unless I completely rebooted the system. I give ZA five stars, and none of those stars are because it's FREE.
We bought Zone Alarm for $19 a copy for a small 4 computer network running on a USB Hub with analog x proxy server and afer I figured out how to set up the proxy to work with it, it ran great. No fear here.. grc.com reported everything as stealth which really screws up my port scanner when I tried to scan the network from a remote location. Great product.

Do the crime, do the time. Cybercop is on your trail.......
Does ZA prevent my workstations from accessing my server, I heard it might, if so, should I try the business version?
ZoneAlarm - very cool, does exactly what it says on the tin! Best of all, it's free!!!
Since installing it at home, I have been amazed at the number of attempted penetrations and port scans I've received.
Also, one of our guys has been using ZoneAlarm on his machine on our Novell/NT network with no problems.
Regards,
Mark.
program is very good especially in stealth mode
I have been running Zone Alarm for a long time. Yesterday I was on IRC and some 6 different computers tried to do a port scan on my and Zone Alarm caught them all, eventhough it almost crashed my system getting over 500+ hits within a 2 min it seemed like. Needless to say the people who had Zone Alarm up decided to retaliate. Since Zone Alarm saves the information we were able to get thier IP numbers and had fun with the ping commands
exellent utility.installed on 2 puders at home.
I installed ZA from the info on this post. I must say I love it. I do not know a lot about firewalls, so the easiest and bug free one is what I want. ZA is easy to use and to understand. My wife most recently has discovered Napster. Now if you do not know about Napster, when you download an MP3, it allows other people to have access to your MP3 download directory on you harddrive! This is by default setup with Napster mind you, and there are ways around it. When people would try to get an MP3 from my wife's computer, ZA stoped them dead. It is a great program, and I plan on paying for the full version so I can use it on more than one computer.
Zone alarm is an excellent freebie to add to a customer's system. It adds a sense of security and does an excellent job (especially with cable and DSL connections).
Two other recommended programs are webwasher and starteditor. eliminates popups and helps to keep malicious/unwanted programs from starting at boot.
ZDNET has some details on ZA different functions/settings at
www.zdnet.com/zdhelp/stories/main/0,5594,2610364,00.html.
Memorize this URL. There will a test in the morning.

i first heard of ZA from a sunday morning talk show on PC's i listen to. (for those of you in the greater LA area KFI 640AM 0900 sunday morning) since hearing about it almost 6 moths ago i dl'd it and gave it a run. I LOVE IT! i have had so much fun with people trying to get in and then turn right around and ping em to death. I liked it so much i archived on my .exe cd. now i included it with all OS or system upgrades to my customers,..... they love it too.

well i remember when i first downloaded zone alarm, one of my ex co-workers bet me $20, that after installing it i would have atleast 3 attempts in a hour time frame. I installed it and 20 minutes later i was $20 poorer. Turned out the guy that was trying to get worked for a isp tech suppost department in philidelphia. Boy was he supprised when we called him on the phone =-)
I still wish i could use linux like nathen did. Took less then 20 minutes to find out exactly who it was comming from.
two thumbs up Im not schitzofrentic..im just siscal and ebert

ZoneAlarm is so easy to use! It just shows how many people try to hack in!
zonealarm Pro is even better !!!!
Hey shinma and fu_man who are you to say who can use this for personal or business use when your asses aren't even registered!!!

I am a bomb technician, if you see me running try and keep up
I might as well add my 2 cents worth, so here goes...I wouldn't start my puter up today without Zone Alarm. I recently cleaned out the text file that Zone Alarm creates whenever someone or something probes your ports. I was astounded.
Cool, thanks for the link. Shows I'm completely stealthed w/ ZA... for now. I compliment it w/ AnalogX CookieWall - free too. I'm running WinME and no problems incase anyone wondered.Quote:

I barely get any hack attempts, but it's nice to know/control when autoupdate or any other 'rogue' programs try and access the internet.
Have been using Zone Alarm for some months. It is easy to use and very stable. A real winner.
What the hell does that have to do with anything?Quote:
