Idiots at Compusa
I was in the local compusa the other day just laughing at their prices.
I just happened to over hear a idiot, who worked there, say to a female customer. I don't have cable internet because the company that supplies it is going to go bankrupt in a few days. We have @home in our town, and I haven't had a problem to this date. I could not believe when he said that he has 3 computers sharing a 56k and that it is faster then his buddies cable.
You can just guess how much of an idiot I made him feel like when I broke into his conwersation and told her how much of moron he was.
I feel sorry for the people who buy parts and systems from this joke of a company!

Between CompUSA, Fry's Electronics, Best Buy and Circuit City I've heard and read (on this forum) some of craziest things  ! I stay away from Circuit City like the plague. I still go to Best Buy from time to time for sales (bought a Sony TV there a couple of months ago). Fry's is OK, but you have to know what your looking for and don't expect any knowledgable assistance. CompUSA serves as a stop for software and parts in an emergency. Actually one of the best deal I ever got was an as is purchase of a Compaq 1215 Laptop 3 years ago for $499.00 at CompUSA. It's still running well today though slow (P180, 80 meg Ram, 1gig HD). :D

I don't even bother correcting them anymore, sometimes I'll but into the conversation and add even more wrong facts to the conversation just to laugh later on about it. I heard a BestBuy employee tell a customer they needed to buy some more IRQ's before installing a CDRW and scanner.

I don't even try, I don't get paid to sell the stuff so I will not even help. The only time when Floor sales techs and I butt heads is when I am the customer that is asking question. Get pretty hot when the only thing I ask them is about warranty crap and they feel like they have to flex their techie muscles and I have to beat them down to even get them to give me the info I asked for, ex. Me: Does this carry a 14 or 30 day warranty and could it be upgrade to a year or even 3 years? CompUSA: Well do you have enough IRQs to handle the speaker system you just bought. Me: Well I could beat the crap out of you
Altough it really is all who you talk to. We can't just label every floor sales tech as stupid. I went into Best Buy for a Creative Labs CD-RW (it was cheap, so get of my back) that was a coaster maker. I had to talk to two techs:
Me: I am here to return this under the 3 year warranty program I purchased.
Tech1: What's wrong
Me: Well out of a 50 spindle it only burned to correctly. On top of that I tried it in two different system, windows 95, 98, 2000, and ME. Tied different IDE configurations and still a nogo.
Tech1: Did you read the instructions?
Me: Yes, but they read like a Chinese translator for Nintendo.
Tech1: Well read the instructions and it should work after that.
Me: ?!?!!? *so I wait 30 minutes until shift change*
Me: I am here to return this under the 3 year warranty program I purchased.
Tech2: What's wrong
Me: Out of a 50 spindle, only 2 media get burned correctly.
Tech2: Ok, here is store credit. Go pick out a burner.
Me: WaaHoooooo! I love you man

Here in the UK we've got PC World, which is much the same. I returned a 6 month old TDK Writer at the weekend, which cost me £180 when new. You're entitled by law to a 12-month warranty which says you can have a refund or replacement. I tell the guy on the returns counter I would like another TDK - not an unreasonable request - as this one doesn't work anymore. Yes, I've tried in other PCs, operating systems, IDE cables. he says:
"Uhhh, we don't stock these anymore. We've had a lot of retu..." and bit his tongue.
"Returns? I'd like a refund then"
"Sorry, you're only entitled to a refund in the first 28 days", which is bullsh*t. "You can pick another writer, but we can't refund the difference"
Now, the most expensive writer in stock is £130 and there's no way these guys are getting £50 of my hard earned.
"Give me a refund *PLEASE*"
"No" He started to sweat.
The manager's been hovering around behind me and decides to jump in: "Sorry sir, we can't give a refund - store policy."
I start quoting the Sale Of Goods act, and the manager's hand is in the till before I finish. As I was walking out the door, the guy says to the manager "Well, it was worth a try" and the manager goes "Mmm". Now I'm angry. I would normally never go back to a shop with such sh*tty service, but just to bug the guy I went back in and bought a £90 LiteOn (Which is quite a good burner), took it to the till where the pimply teenager is in the middle of telling the story to one of his colleagues, paid for it and waved the other £90 under his nose. More money than he earned that week...

Don't get too mad at them at CompUSA. I have been able to take advantage of it. Here are some of the items I have bought from them. Most were abtained from a mislabeled price on the shelf or an advertising error.
AverTV TV Tuner PCI Card, Bought three years ago for $39.00. Yep, that is what it said on the shelf and what it rang up for. It was not advertised or on sale ether. The next week I went back at it was $89.00.
US Robotics V.92 external modem bought 6 months ago the day they came out for $79. The add in the paper said it was for a V.90 modem, but they didn't pay attention. Just looked at the picture of the box. To be honest I didn't realize ether untill I got home.
Maxtor 40gig 7200RPM HD, bought two months ago, my end price $20. I purchased the Windows XP preorder packet for $10 at got a coupon that said I could purchase a Maxtor 40gig HD from CompUSA instantly for $99 with a $30 mail-in rebate. The coupon made no reference to the speed of the drive (5400 Vs 7200 RPM). At the time they had a special going on for that drive as well. $20 off instantly with a Maxtor $30 mail-in rebate. So Final cost: $99 - $20 instant savings - $30 Maxtor Mail-in rebate -$30 Windows XP Preorder mailin rebate = $20.
The clerk who helped me was disgusted. He had a look of "Hell, I should just give him the drive for free." as he rang me up.
So, take advantage of the lack of inteligence there. Sometimes you can get a good deal.

See, i think the competence of each store varies from location to location. Where I live, Best Buy is good for absolutely nothing but software, and then generally only games. Circuit City sucks when it comes to software, but I would go there for any hardware, computer related or not, any day(im going to try to get a job there actually). CompUSA....avoid it like the plague. I have only bought 2 things from there. both of them games and both on sale at the time. I refuse to buy anything else.

The CompUSA around here is terrible. I hate going there, but sometimes I have to. You always have to watch when you check out to make sure that everything rings up right. I've had several things ring up wrong and I say "Hey, that's not the price that was shown" and go show them and get it for the right price.
They're also terrible at not changing prices back after sales they have. One day, got Descent 3 (my fav. game :) ) for the sale price, which the sale ended like 3 days before(didn't know the price on there wasn't the reg. price). Got up to the register, it rang up at the reg. price. I told the guy that wasn't the price on the shelf, went back, showed him and in fine print it gave the dates of the price. He was like "Well, someone didn't do they're job. They're loss" and gave it to me at the sale price. :)

I'm assuming that you went to Glasgow store.
I used to work at PCW in Blackburn as a tech (I was young and I needed a job, OK!?) - they should at least offer you credit.
Ah well.
The great thing is, now that I've worked for them, I know just how far I can push it before they can legally say no.
In fact, the SOG act says that they must give you a "reasonable period of time" to evaluate the goods, so PCW gives you 28 days. After that, it's exchange or credit note. The refund word doesn't occur in their pathetic minds.
CD

I hear CompUSA is having a 2 for 1 sale. And if you buy now they will throw in some I/O addresses and DMA for free.

That's after the mail in rebate though. But when you send in the rebate they send you an additional 2 free so it works out ok.

I love those crap techs. They generate a lot of business for us. I love it when they try to do a drive image to a drive that is to big for the bios. I don't know how they do it but they will do an image and only get half of the information and wipe out the old drive. The company that I work for does data recovery so they make us a lot of money. Keep up the good work Frys, Compusa and Best Buy. Keep getting the really "good" techs.
