do you agree?
I was just wondering.
Do you guys and gals realize that we might put extra effort into lusers machines while at the same time neglecting our own.
I mean we all have put extra elbow grease into that gum covered, nicotine stained, sticker having thingy customers call their machines and when we turn ours on, it itself is covered with gum, stains of God knows what, as well as other **** that I prefer not to mention.
Do you agree that we are neglecting our very own machines?

I agree. I think a computer tech's machine is probably the worst maintained machine out there. When I get home, I don't feel like running scandisk and defrag when the computer seems sluggish...I just power 'er right off, and back on again...sure, my swap file's made it over the 200meg mark! https://forums.windrivers.com/ Customers whine that their computer locks up once in a 16 hour period (every other work day, roughly). I work my *** off trying to track down the problem...then, think to myself, "Hey, I can get mine to lock up at least twice in a 4 hour period!"
-
This is true, and not just in our business. My brother-in-law, who is a mechanic, has a 1983 Ford Bronco which has the oil changed in it a grand total of 3 times since he bought in new in December 82. Why is it when you are in a certain business, you tend to let your own stuff slide? Which makes me wonder...do docters catch all kinds of diseases, and not bother to treat themselves? Do plumbers have backed up toilets and **** shooting up out of their septic tanks and just not care? Do accountants not file their taxes? I NEED to know!

I have ScanDisk and Defragmenter in the scheduled tasks to run overnight. I don't even think about them now.
-
My desk could be declared a disaster area but I'm damn near obsessive compulsive about my PC. I clean and organize the HD constantly--maybe that's why my system never crashes...
-
I run scandisk, defrag and do antivirus checks once a week.
I also check my machine for the stability of it's fans and I clean it often.
Sometimes I feel so bored at home, that I can't even undress myself to get some sleep.
Besides that, I always check my machine and update my personal files.
My system rocks!

Actually, my machines are pretty darn clean. I guess it goes back to being anal retentive with certain things, but my personal computers have always been in good shape. Granted, something like my 'software test' machine is junked up at work, only 'cause I don't really care. Screwed registry, old drivers, etc. As far as cleanliness, mine all have tons of fans (O/Cing) and have to be dusted often.

As a side note:
For a cleaner computer in a dirty area, talk to a copier technician (Panasonic, Mita) or two. They have some of the best dust filters you can get. They are essentially 2-3" wide strips of medium gauze with 1/4" of adhesive on either side. Works well for the vented holes in the face and back of the machine. Since they pick up so much dust, you have to replace them fairly often.

My sister is a nurse, and she says that nurses are the worst patients next to doctors. Their problem is is that they know all the lingo, and fully understand what another doctor is doing, and often interject with, "Why not do this?" Also, trying to get either a doctor or a nurse to go to the hospital for an illness is next to impossible.

I dunno...I'm pretty good about maintaining my machines at work and home. They're set up more or less the same and I'm very picky about what I install on them. When I put on Office 2000 I only installed Word, Excel, and Outlook, and picked through the list taking out all of the useless bulls**t that I would never need. I also don't have RealPlayer, RealJukebox, or any of the other obnoxious, crappily coded God-forsaken web doohickies that people are so sure that they HAVE to use. My tray has VirusScan, volume control, and Logitech Mouseware in it. That's all. Most of my users have trays 6+ icons long and wonder why their machines hang.
-
I'm real picky about my personal systems and keep them well maintained at both home and the shop.
-
My home system looks like crap...cover off, part strewn about, but it runs unbelievably fast and stable, it's only 2 OS crashes were due to my own stupidity.
-
I try to keep my work machine running well. My home machine I keep in fairly decent shape when I get time (ususally about once a month).
-
My home PC was generally a mess. The cover was always off because I hated messing with the screws whenever I wanted to mess around with the hardware. I had old cards and such laying around on my desk, improperly loaded drivers for devices I rarely used, and files scattered everywhere. It was a mess.
I have a Dell PC now, and it's tidey. (If I had built the PC myself I would have slacked off.) I really like Dell's case. The power supply is on hinges, so it doesn't need to be removed to work on stuff. I can take the side pannel off in less a couple seconds to work on the guts.
Have no fear.. Eventually I'll make a mess of this thing too. It always happens.
-
most electricians have a blown light bulb in their house, most plumbers have a leaky faucet, most auto mechanics neglect their car in some way,....it's probably because when ya get home from work.. you don't want to work.
-
Has anyone seen my cover for my case ? I haven't seen it since I built the thing....
-
Cover off, cables outside but it is clean. I nevery defrag nor update any software unless I have to. I update only games. I reload my OS before I defrag (I switch between W98, W2000 or Linnux). I lock up once a night and I hate it when my wife asks a question when our children's games do not work right or she canno get on the internet. I hate even more when a customers complains when their CPU locks up once a week and wants me to find out why.
-
sure the cover is off my case, and I have a work light clamped directly to the case, but hey....linux dont need no stinkin' defrag, and my windows stuff hardly gets used, so scandisk once a month, and thats all I need. https://forums.windrivers.com/ converting the world to linux on machine at a time.

Truly I do spend a lot more time on other people's machines than my own (especially my roomate's...I'm building my dream system in HER case cause she has the money to buy the components!!)...I try to keep my system clean though, I just got it this summer and I don't want it to become cluttered like my old one
