[RESOLVED] The Laptop of the Rising Sun

Had a customer bring in a brand new Dell laptop yesterday never out of the box. The owner needed us to setup her internet account on it. There's just one catch, though. She's Japanese, and though she speaks English very well, she can only read Japanese. So she had Dell set Windows up in entriely - you guessed it - JAPANESE! And there was NO WAY to enable English whatsoever.

Luckily, it would accept English input, so I dumbfounded the boss and the newer techs by breezing through the Internet setup without actually being able to read any of it. Don't they realize that I've run through the Internet Connection wizard so many times, I can do it in ANY language?

They too wanted IE installed, and I breezed through it, since I've done it many times.

I had to do work in an office of I believe some Chinese people. It was amazing that I could actually go through the Network setup just from knowing where things were.

We have a customer that works in China half the year. He uses a laptop that is in Chinese(sp?) that I get to fix whenever it comes in. Now thats fun. You ever get a error message in Chinese? It's harder to understand then it's english/ms counterpart. Then again if I spoke Chinese it might help.

Ok, now I know you guys are going to yell at me for jumping on the MS bandwagon, but doesn't it say something about MS that you can fix or add something to the OS without being able to read it?

One thing I forgot to mention - since it had never been turned on at all, I also had to enter the registered owner, Product key, etc. It was freakin' hilarious! I'm not sure if it was an MS of Japan deal, or Dell's doing, but while I was going through the initial set up, there was some old Wizard guy in a blue and yellow robe (kind of like the MS Office assistants) Telling me how to use the features of the laptop. Of course all the text and speech were in Japanese, except for registered trademarks. Did you know what Microsoft in Japanese is Microsoft? And Windows is Windows? https://forums.windrivers.com/

Sure does....it says we've had to fix the damn OS so many times, we can do it without even reading what it says.

One time, a blind customer brought there computer in and they don't have a monitor, so I installed 98 and IE5.5 without seeing it at all!!!...........Ok, so maybe I'm lying, but I feel like I've reinstalled 95/98 so many times I could do it in my sleep!

Hehe. All I learned of German was from the Wolf series (Castle Wolfenstein, Beyond Castle Wolfenstein, and Wolfenstein 3D).

Ya want another good game with some german in it. Medal of Honor for Playstation (stop laughing at me dammit). The script of geman phrase is like three pages long and some of them are really funny, for instance "tell helga i love her".

I have a good friend from japan who needed his laptop fixed. all in japanese of course, since he is my bud i said, i'll fix it, no prob, took it home and JESUS, couldn't figure any of it out. the next day he came over and translated for me, we fixed it up in a jiffy!!

My younger brother has a friend from Japan and his computer needed a tune-up and asked me to help. I was suprised at how easy it was. Needed him to help translate for me at times but not bad.

Oh, pcshark, you could probably find Wolfenstein at http://www.classicgaming.com under their ROMS. I once found a site (twas in Swiss, however) that had over a thousand Atari 400/600/800/XE ROMs! Sweet! If you have a little patience, you can plunk through the site and find the FTP server. I'll have to find the address for that one though!

It's funny. You spend 2 grand on a system to play games that a $90 (at its most expensive) system would play.
Sometimes I cry when I think about my sister giving away our Atari XE (with a woppin 64K of RAM) and the ten thousand games we had with it. I've never had a system run better than that ol' Atari. I never once got a BSOD on it. Hehe
