Is it just me or is Microsoft trying to stop us from using non-Microsoft products.
Whenever I try and download Netscape, Internet Explorer locks up!
Am I just being paranoid or is Microsoft trying to control us?

maybe you just need to fix your pc. No problems here aon numerous systems. If they did, they would be opening themselves to a huge lawsuite. try updatting your ie first
If MS was even 1% as bad as many of you seem to believe, they would have gone out of business years ago. If a product is bad and no other options (they are a monopoly) exist, then someone will make a better product. Look what happened to the US auto industry in the mid/late seventies when US quality went down the toilet Japan stepped right in with better products. I don't know about anyone else but if a product I'm interested in doesn't measure up, I won't buy it just because it's the only game in town, I find a different option or do without. Kudo's to those of you who have switched to Linux. While I may not agree with your conclusions about Windows, I respect that you acted on your convictions instead of just bitching....
OS/2 Warp 5 is coming... (-:

Shhhh! No bad-mouthing Microsoft! They have eyes everywhere. That last person to bad-mouth Microsoft was DriverGuy... and he's disappeared!
I have seen this problem on a new Dell a couple years ago. My friend had just bought and wanted netscape, Win95 with IE4 preinstalled. He could not download Netscape, I remember there was an article on Netscapes website about IE4 not downloading their products and how to work around it. He finally had to have a friend download it, share it on the network, grab the install file and then load it.
Good luck with trying to install netscape, if anything get a copy of MaximumPC with CD and netscape should be on the CD I believe.
Tony
you are not paranoid. they are out to get you. i suggest a long vacation. Bermuda is nice.
seriously, how can you possibly think that Microsoft would do anything to harm another company? they are merely trying to innovate. don't forget this is the company that innovated the GUI(or maybe it was apple, or xerox)? not to mention their pioneering of the internet with the first useful browser(or was it Netscape?). and who can forget how they took Java and changed it so it would only run on windows?
If they were really doing something illegal don't you think some company would have sued them by now?
I personally hate microsoft. I have had to many problems with their software for me to ever like it, but as a gamer I have to use their OS. The thing that really ticks me off about them is that they dont even program their own saftware to be compatible with each other in some cases. I hate it that there is only one real OS that all games/software are written for.
Dont think it is microsoft in this case. Perhaps, just perhaps it is netscape in this case. I mean as often as netscape is locking up computers these days, why wait until it is installed before starting?
Using IE 5.5 to download Netscape. And there's no way that I'm going to use the "Backup" 386-16 to download it.
If DriverGuy is missing, perhaps he downloaded an illegal copy of Microsoft Windows 1.01 (I think it was copyrighted in 1985, but not sure) and they found him.
RLD, I'd recommend doing a search on Netscape's site. There are known problems when attempting to download Netscape through IE. If you search their site; you should be able to find the workaround.
I came across the same problem when netscape first changed over to that "Smart Download" junk. So I got it off a CD after several attemps to download.
As far as Microsoft goes, I won't bash them. They have just tried to make everything easier for the users with no brains, but really just messed up the software. Some people claim Linux is better. But when Redhat pushes it into home pc's we will see the real test.
just my 2 cents :-)
Netscape blah, I tried the newset 4.76 version, I got it installed it worked nice ut when I closed it I got the " This program has performed an illegal operation ) dialouge box, I clicked the details button so see what file was offended and when I clicked close the dialouge bos was instantly back, I had to hit the reset button
I will not run Netscape again since it is unstable in itself, Maybe you need AOL to run it

dude, get off that OS/2 kick, come-on, show of hands, how many of us USE OS/2 regularly. Having it just installed don't count.
Runs wonderfuly on Mandrake 7.1, too.

Who the hell is General Protection and why is he messing with my comuter?
Thanks people! I installed an older version of Netscape from a CD and downloaded the newer version through Netscape (Yes I did use a winmodem). And yes it did work.
Have you withdrawn money from a cash machine lately? Guess what? A very large majority of cash machines run on...Oh, I just don't have the heart to say it.Quote:

OK I give up. Everyone gets to talk about Linux, but I can't mention OS/2. Fine, I just won't post anymore. (-;
