[RESOLVED] How do I Make Dos Client to Win98 Server

I have a (486-100)Win98 Server setup with the following:
Client for MS Networks.
Protocol: ipx/spx and netbeui
File and printer sharing.
NE2000 compatible net card

Now what I want to do is start a clean hard drive on a 486pc with DOS only using a plug/play ethernet card-hence no jumpers.
Assume I have NO software to recognize the ethernet card. (shareware/freeware?)
I want this machine to network to the server then use the cdrom unit to install win95+.

CAN THIS BE DONE?

I am a volunteer tech at East Catholic High School in Detroit Michigan. The goal is to setup a Learning Lab with donated 486pc's. I have no software to start a DOS client connection to the Win98 Server. How do I set this up and what can I get for free? ;-)

Let's see, first there isn't such a thing as a Win98 Server, but from the protocols I'd say you have a novell server. This forum is for one tech asking another tech a particular question. Your question is basically how do I build a network without the necessary tools.

Can I suggest that you find someone to donate their time to assist you in this task
Also, if this is a learning lab, make this a peer to peer network (no servers involved). Buy a cheap atapi aware cdrom drive to put in for your installs.

There is several ways you could do it, but it take some time and no way could I explain it here without writing a book.

Does the school not have an IT person available to assist or create this lab?

How much memory and hard drive space is available on these machines?

Plain and simple your remarks are not noteworthy.

I am the IT and with the way I have Win98 setup it is a SERVER.

The situation in this school is the best that it gets. Without ANY resources how do I accomplish the task at hand. There is NO monetary funds available for spending.

Wildcat Dune, shutup, don't post something if you are going to make no attempt to help, and don't attack what they say they have. Just because a person runs IPX/SPX doesn't mean that they have a novel server, just because this is tech to tech and you judge someone not being a tech doesn't mean you should just write them off. The Win98 box is just a file server.

TDBorbas, let me see if i've got this right. You have a 98 Box you want to use as a file server for a network. It's purpose is to share its CDROM drive, which contains a windows install CD, over the network. You want DOS computers to boot up and run the setup program from the install CD off the server computer. If what I have said is correct then I have the solution to your problem my friend. You will need WinImage 5.0, get it from this link

And then you will need an E-mail from me with the Dos Client boot disk image file. The file is 536k so give me an e-mail address that I can send this to that can recieve binaries. Once done, you will need to edit the autoexec.bat and change the computer name and share name and add any other lines you would like to get setup running. Post back when you have WinImage with an e-mail address so we can get this process started. What type of NIC cards on the client computers? Kingstons? You don't have the drivers for the NICS anymore?

Tony the effort you have shown me is very commendable. I have an Associate in Science from Henry Ford Community College. Many years putting together computers for people and not one have had a frown. :-) My services are volunteer cause I am handicapped. A sleeping disorder causes me not to work a normal position. Enough said here is the info. This is a completely barebone operation. Your understanding of what I have here at the school is correct.

I downloaded the WinImage from CNET. My email address is [email protected] or [email protected]. All but one NIC company name is (not) known. Every NIC here is PNP meaning jumperless. These machines were donated from sources that are not contact able. No software for various VLB I/O cards, very ancient MediaVision sound cards that ran a cdrom with removable trays. 500k hard drives are best I am dealing with. And 486 machines with mostly 8mg of ram. (I am working hard to get at least 16mg per pc for Win98 to run) No funds for any sort for supply.

Anyway I am greatful. You are a tech that may be getting paid. I am one that is not. What is my angle? A low tuition based school who needs a hand to help kids get a better chance at winning.

Check out this site for free or cheap hardware. http://www.backthruthefuture.com/
They appear to be a company recycling computers to keep them out of landfills. While they are mostly retail you might check and see if they can help you. an E-mail might get you some newer hardware free or cheap.
I don't have any old stuff sitting around or I would help. Sounds like a good cause.

I have the DOS client bootdisk at work so I won't be able to e-mail it to you till morning. It is setup to use an NE2000 NIC. Some NICS though jumperless will include on the driver disk the ability to configure the NICS through software, thats why I asked, I have done this with Genius and Kingston NICS. But, lets see what happens with this boot disk I have.

Maybe you should post on tech tips or tech to tech if anyone has some hardware laying around taking up space that they could send you. I have a couple pentium class mainboards with processors and ram that are taking up space in my closet if you need them. I'll be back in the morning.

hey man, I too have some hardware lying around. let me know what you are looking for and I will see what I have. I also have friends that are into the recycling business. they always help out schools and churches with support and/or computer installations and maintenence.. If you like I can contact them and ask them for some help.

remember man, most technicians feel that they belong to a certain group and often feel left out from general society and feel that the only people they can turn to are fellow technicians. I guess this is the reason that tech forums are the most popular forums out there. ask and you shall receive. get back to me . I want to help.

I have some books that deal with dos5.0 and above. This is a great starting point for any student that is interested in learning Dos which we all know is the building blocks of every Micros**t product out there. let me know..

I am not saying this to ridicule just trying to help you understand client/server concepts.IPX is the transport for Novell so it is fair to assume that mentioning IPX means you are running a Novell Server.I mean unless you were connecting to Novell why else would you use IPX?
I am glad you got the help you were looking for but give the guy a break for correcting you,he is only doing it so you don't go to a real company someday as an IT man and mention your experience with Win 98 as a server.

You could use IPX in a large environment where NetBEUI broadcast storms would effect network performance, yet you didn't want the administrative burden of setting up TCP/IP. Sure, TCP/IP is lower overhead than IPX, but IPX is easier to set up, and an IPX network will work with Microsoft products. You don't even need to set up WINS.

I wish to say this and it is simple.
I did not get into this forum to debate like the presidential canidates.
Please view what the term server means.
If a machine is set up to SHARE anything whether it is a file or a drive it is a server. It is that simple. If you feel the way you set up a server for IBM is certain programs running Novell software or similar then you are stuck with one view of matters. Sorry I see a server is anything that will provide for others and file sharing or printer sharing is a SERVER. I am only using the term loosely persons. Please guys relax and enjoy the holiday coming.

IPX= 80% data 20% header per packet
TCP/IP= 60% data 40% header per packet

IPX is more efficient
If there was a Novel server, doesn't Client for Netware have to be installed?

Don't get to concerned about the "debating". A lot of information and education takes place during a discussion. Where else can you go to have an argument about this subject and others relating to computers? The language is about the same as if you were there in person.
