What's the best laptop

I want to buy a laptop..what is the best brand out there?

Probably Dell, IBM.

NOT Emachines

Dell.. Strictly because of what you can get into one..
Dell allows you up to 1ghz(for now)..
Most like sony only allow like a max of 850 or 900..

Some laptops don't have all the ports, for external monitor,Usb,FIREWIRE,mouse,keyboard.. blah blah blah I could go on..
- Some other places give you half these options, and only 1 USB port.

the HD for dell can sometimes get more space than others.. (Inspiron 8000 can get 32 GB.. while competition allows only 30!!)

And a 32 mb Geforce 2 card! most you can't even CUSTOMIZE the Video card!

Also, The Dell can get good monitor sizes(8000 is 15", but the more Mobile versions, may be around 14" .. you should check it out)

Price is pretty good for Dell also, other competitors had less options (2 GB less, slower processor, no SECOND "Modular Bay",smaller video card,etc!)

Plus, Dell always has Special offers, I've seen Dell going with 2 special offers at once with the same computer..
Such as 150$ off and FREE SHIPPING.

you'll have to catch it on the right day tho..

Well, Dell is best for me.. I am not sure what exactly you are using a computer for, but Dell is the best for overall customization.

That is a very subjective question. IF you asked me what car is the best I would ask you are you looking for reliability, speed, looks, design? The same applies to a laptop. Are you looking for design, features, service, speed, expandibility, battery life. It all depends on your priorities. For me, I want a 3 or 4 spindle design which means I want the Harddrive,Floppy,CDRW and maybe a second harddrive and I am willing to have a 5-7 pound PC. You might want an ultra portable like a Sony Viao 505 but only you know what you want. I am asked what is the cheapest PC all the time and I just say "Any one you can steal" <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

I like the DEll inspiron. Good price excellent performance and suport. I sent the college presidents Dell in for warrenty work ,user damage, and had it back in three days. I don't get that kind of service in town no matter what I pay. Stay away from Compaqs. If you want a value laptop go with the Toshiba Satalite. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

I am extremely happy with my Inspiron 8000.
The price was also amazing!

P3 900mhz, 192mb ram, 20GB HD, 8x DVD, 15.1" Super XGA screen, 16mb GeForce2 Go, 56k, 10/100 nic. It's the bomb! The only thing I'm talking ONLY thing that even comes NEAR bothing me about it is the hard drive. It is only 5400rpm and I'm not even sure if it's ata66. <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0"> Just takes a bit to get use to after using 7200rpm and ATA100 for the past months... but the 900mhz and huge LCD makes up for it. *grin* <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

Dell and Sony are my personal reccommendations:

1. Dell offers a wide range of options, has great customer service and excellent warranty service, good pricing and is easy to order.

2. Sony - the best lightwieght multimedia machines. Do not have all the options (Ram and Processor) that Dell has, but make up for it in a small, lightweight package very suited for audio/video presentation, graphic design, etc...

Your right, I do want to say though that I am mostly a portables tech. I work on all sorts of portables and I love Dell's! I hardly see them and when I do it's because the loser gravity tested the system, spilled soda on it, punched the LCD screen, etc.. I have to say that Dell's are built to last and go through a ton of abuse and keep ticking. Not only that spec wise the Dell remains on top, it totally rocks! If I had money I would buy a Dell Inspiron 8000 ina heart beat.

Whatever you do,, DO NOT buy a compaq.

Can anyone expand on the "Don't by Compaq's" theme. That's what I was considering...

I have a LOT of problems with Compaqs but most of them are rendered irrelevant by the fact that you are buying a laptop. Desktop Compaqs are a pain in the @$$ to work on - they have proprietary designs that some engineer somewhere thought was "innovative", their CMOS information is stored on the friggin' hard drive, to go through their support you have to learn an entirely new vocabulary of words that end in "-Paq", and their systems usually have @#$%&* Restore CDs that won't work if you change 1 piece of hardware.

Of course, I mostly deal in older desktops. A new laptop is gonna avoid a lot of these problems. Personally I would still avoid Compaq on principle and go instead with a Dell or an IBM for the simple reason that I work in a repair shop and I have never seen a Dell or an IBM come in for sale or repairs. That means one of two things: either they don't break down, or the company's support is so good that you will never need to bring it anywhere else. (It also means that Dell and IBM owners are apparently happy enough with their machines that they don't want to sell them to me.)

In my experience Compaq makes a very good laptop product. I don't care for their desktop models at all (Although the Deskpro series is much better than the standard POS they put out...) I've used and worked on several different Compaq laptops and they are a nice combination of design and functionality.
Most recently I've been looking at the Toshiba Satellite 2805-s402 which has got a lot of great things going for it....

Dell inspiron 8k rules - I have one, and its the best.

GET A 3 year coverage against accidential damage ( dell's complete care) they come out and fix if you pay for it <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> which of course I have, I'm lazy.

Also if u look at the reviews, the dell is hell cheaper, and better, so its dell all the way!

I love how customizable the Dells are. I'm looking forward to an Athlon 4 with 32 MB Geforce 2 graphics with DVD and CDRW. Thats my next notebook. Unfortunatly, I'm not sure if Dell will use anything but Intel procs.

It would be great if you could build your own laptop with standard parts.

I gotta say...I love my Fujitsu E-Series Lifebook. I got the middle one on the page, except I put in a CD-RW drive instead of the DVD. Good performance, decent battery life, nice display, and that built-in wireless mouse rocks!

Don't be afraid of Compaq if the deal is right. I would guess from the clamor here that the Dell Inspiron 8000 is the one to compare to. Get to know pricing, and features from several different brands that you have experienced. Visit laptop showrooms often, for the “seat-of-the-pants” test. It will also help you decide on your needs and wants. If price becomes an issue, figure out what will be a sacrifice, and what you can do without; then make those spec. changes. I don’t appreciate Gateway, but stand by Dell and a few Compaq’s. I know very little about others, except that older Toshiba's suck.

As far as expandability, durability and OS support, IBM Thinkpads and Dells are the way to go. Sony's are a pain in the butt if you ever want to put an OS on it that doesn't ship with it. I have 3 ThinkPads, a T20, T21 & 600X. I am running 2000 Professional, Win98SE & RedHat Linux on these laptops and they work great. When I have had problems they have done the warantee work and had my laptop back to me in 3 to 4 business days.

Not to sound like a rabid IBM Salesman, but noticed no mention on think pads, and thought their virtues should be extolled.
