Nice one Joker. Another user who is having no problems with a SB Live! & VIA 686B chipset :) :) Welcome to the 'elite' club of those of us who have had no problems :) :) :)
Turns out the problems i was experiencing earlier this week (on an identicle system i built for a friend) were caused by the Video card and were easily corrected by changing the AGP drive strength.
I have found no faults yet in the Live other then its bloaty software. Which is merely anoying and can always be disabled.

SBLive Platinum ( value on some)+ Via chipsets on my machines = no problems.

Yeah there is definitely nothing wrong with the sombination of hardware. If people are experiencing problems its probably a matter of not having things setup correctly.
Out of four machines (3 of which built by me) i've seen with Via chipsets and SBlive I have yet to see any problems.
Oh, and i wrote my A+ tests today. Man they were disgustingly easy. I didn't take classes didn't read the books and i still got 92% and 87% on the exams. My boss says i get a raise for every peice of paper to my name, woo hoo! (Maybe i'll upgrade my comp..... j/k)

Looks like i spoke to soon.
One of the machines i built last week with the SBlive+KT7A has started having fits. It will work fine then at random lockup and emit a continueous tone.
Have tried disabling sb16 emu on the Live. I killed all the integrated peripherial in the bios that i wasnt using including USB. I patched to the latest liveware that came out yesterday.
The thing that pisses me off was it worked fine all of last week. Just today it's all b*tchy.
Oh well i'm gonna compare all the bios settings between the two machines which are completely identicle and see if i can find something. I know for sure its software because i just ran the other machine with identicle parts for about 2 days, playing mp3s and surfing the net the whole time.
Maybe ill try the reference drives for the vid card and reload the VIAs after.
What kind of continuous tone? The one that says the CPU is about to catch fire if you don't cool it off right now?

Sounds like the Overheat alarm to me or one of the Fan warnings.
nope the sounds coming out of the speakers that are plugged unto the live value.
update:
it happens when either machines reaches exactly 40 degress celcius.
i think its a monitoring glitch
i've duplciated the prob on both machines now
gonna see if i can reproduce the problem numerous times
nope that was a fluke
hmmm... maybe it is heat since i've been running my system without the cover it hasnt had a problem for the last 3 hours. the other system which also has the cover off has locked up several times.
I wish i could nail this problem down.
