A Note From Sowulo

Hi, all...

Curt sent this note out today and asked me to post it here. He's gotten a lot of emails asking why he left or thinking he left for the wrong reasons, and he wanted to let you all know why...

To anyone interested:

Just to clarify one last time. I did not ultimately decide to leave WD because of Ron. Ron certainly is to be held responsible for building the fire and throwing on the fuel. However, his actions proved to me what a small, egotistical person he truly is and as such not worth being given any credit for driving me away. What finally caused me to make the decision to leave WD was the lack of communication or leadership from the top. Scott had ample opportunity to get involved and chose instead to totally ignore the whole situation. For the thousands of hours I donated to help the site, I felt that the least he could do is take a few minutes to offer an opinion in the Mod's room where I posted my concerns and requested his feedback. But he chose to remain silent. Even at that, I might not have left permanently. But when he took it upon himself to change Lycia's signature while still refusing to comment on the overall situation and the very reason for the content of that sig, that clinched the deal for me.

Also, by not at least requiring Ronny to apologize for his actions, Scott also managed to convince me that he really didn't care what happened in the forums. As such, he made me feel that all the hard work I had put in didn't really matter to him one way or the other. However I looked at it, I kept coming back to the conclusion that Scott had very different ideas about what constitutes socially responsible attitudes and behaviors. That's certainly his right. I could have respected him if he had have communicated something rather than just ignore those of us who did all of his work. But he didn't. I can only conclude that his values are far different than mine and it is my choice to distance myself from him and his business.

Scott makes his living off running WD for internet.com. Contributing as a volunteer as I did for so long helped him do his job. To be ignored during a crisis was to me, an insult much greater than anything little Ronny tried to pull off. I might have been able to stay the course and ignore Ronny's juvenile tantrums. But over this incident I lost all respect for Scott and because of him, Internet.com. Since WD's income is produced by ad dollars earned in part by my presence generating ad 'hits', I also felt that I was no longer interested in supporting Scott's livelihood by resigning my position as a mod and just logging on to visit with my friends. I will not be back. I really didn't wish to post one of those, "I'm leaving--feel sorry for me" topics other's have posted in the past. I've tried to stay in touch with those who have contacted me since leaving.

For any of you who wish to stay in touch, I welcome your emails and will respond (I'm a couple of weeks behind at the moment and hope to catch up soon). Several of you let me know of a couple of recent topics and activities that were complimentary toward me. Thanks for the kind thoughts but I would prefer that you would all just let it rest. I am not returning to WD. Thanks for all your support and encouragement. What I wouldn't give to have you all living close to here so that we could get together and have some laughs whenever we wished. Leaving has left a pretty huge hole in my life but hey, that's life: change happens.

Because without any sort of response to the contrary, I pretty much have to see it Curt and Renee's way as well.

Well, I'm sure I'm going to get flamed also but Curt did all of this himself. He was given ample opportunity to take care of this garbage himself...then he laid out an ultimatum to Scott: either Ron goes or I go. What a crock!!!

He got his feelings hurt and now he's gone.

And yes, Curt was a great Mod but to be truthful with you, I haven't missed him.

He had this posted because he had a lot of emails asking him why, asking him to come back etc...

It seems the people who do that are the ones who will be missed, the ones who post the I'm not coming back, are usualy back within days.

Ok, let's get one thing strait. None of us own this site. It's a privilege to be able to post here, for free. If this was a paid site, it MIGHT, and I repeat MIGHT be a different story. Yes, Curt was a god mod. Yes he was a popular mod. I didn't always agree with him, just as I haven't always agreed with Ron. But you know what? This is Scott's baby. This is his site, weather or not he sold it to Internet.com. This is his child that he born, raised, nurtured and spilled his blood sweat and tears over. Intill you are running several t-1 lines out of your house, just so tens of thousands of people gave get/share free internet advice, then you all can try to tell people how to run this site. You know what? Even then, keep your noses out of it. It's none of you're business! You have control over only one thing in this place. And that's your participation. Other than that, back off. Scott doesn’t owe anyone anything. People here are in-grateful and ignorant. People need to learn their roles around here. This is a free site, and instead of crying over the loss of one member, we should be celebrating the fact that we've all had to get to know that member, and the hundreds of other members we all know so well.

Scott, I know you'll probably read this, and I want to say you have my full support, and sympathy. Stick to your guns boss, you're doing nothing wrong, and don't let any bitter people tell you otherwise.

Not that it really mattered a whole lot.

I mainly come here to express my days or comments and opinions on topics. It helps the day pass by a little quicker sometimes.

I also remember me saying that the forums sucked. They still are not like they used to be but hey I can live with it. I had to adapt and if it I had to create a post saying that "These fourms suck" (this was a long time ago) then that was my way of adapting. Plus I got countless emails and PM's from users that supported me.

I'll be the first to say that I appreciate anyone who stands up for their principles.

However, Curt is displaying the same level of immaturity that he claims "Ronny" has. This was a "poor Sowulo" post, only he didn't have the courage to post it himself. He had someone else do it for him which just makes it that much more pathetic.

He didn't like something that happened. He quit. That is not behavior to be respected. Rather than fight for his principles, he turned tail and left. He blames "Ronny" and then he blames Scott for not backing him up. Is it Scott's job to fight Curt's battles? Ever heard of "the truth shall set you free"? If what you claim to be your truth is the actual truth, people will see it and believe it.

Has "Ronny" gloated at all over his so-called "victory"? No. He has been mature about it, as far as I can see.

Ron is a more strict mod than Sowulo and doesn't worry as much about the touchy-feely crap that Sowulo did. Does that make his contribution less? Hell no. Did Ron give an ultimatum? No. I stopped giving ultimatums in the third grade.

Was Curt a nice guy? sure, I can't dispute that. Is it really killing me that he left? No, not really. Does he get my sympathy? No, I can't say he does.

I'm sorry that a lot of people here think his writing was a 'poor me' note. Being neutral during this thing, I've watched everyone involved sink to a real s@#$ level.

To those in favor of Curt -- thats cool, I thought he was ok, I had no problem with him. I use to get a kick out of him a lot of the times when he'd post on something I started.

To those not -- that note wasn't a poor me. He's right on a lot of things -- helping with the site is helping Scott with his job. Granted, I don't know all the details, but thats the way things are.

Opiate, on a side note, that was totally uncalled for. A civil "I don't agree with what he says because" would've been a more approiate action.

Quiet Thunder has a great point -- it is Scotts site, regardless of what happend was right or wrong. Since I don't think any of us know 100% what all happened, who are we to judge one way or the other?

Mr. Pickles if the job your at did something nasty to you...and you tried to fix it and got shunned, would you quit? I think so. There's more important things in life.

I for one am sad to see Sowulo gone from here. I come to WD everyday trying to gain new knowledge and his knowledge and insight and years and years of computer experience will be missed. I personally think that too much politics is involved in determining why people leave here and people seem to forget the point that this is a tech site that is meant to help other people in need of tech help.

Curt knew what being a mod was before he signed up to do it. He knew the rules, inside and out, and he CHOSE to stay. He knew that he was a volunteer. He knew Scott got paid for it. Blaming Scott for it now that he isn't getting his way isn't the mature thing to do.

Trying to insult Ron by calling him "Ronny" isn't going to win him any kind popularity contests with me.

It's not like this whole incident hasn't been copy pasted to about every other member who isn't a member of the steam room.

And just because I'm a jerk doesn't mean that people don't find me entertaining enough to share what they know.

I still disagree. If Curt was interested in letting sleeping dogs lie, he wouldn't have had someone post his message. This is a clear case of trying to appear like the bigger person while insideously trying to gain sympathy for being the "hurt" party.

Why do I see people who have not posted for some time or those who have gone elsewhere coming back to flame this post? Why are all of you arguing again? Why do I see people who have not poted for weeks coming back only for this? There is no need for any of this inane argumentative bull****. Curt wanted this posted so that everyone would know why he left as he was getting a slew of e-mail about it. Many asked – he responded. There was never a call to begin arguing again, this is just an informational post, treat it as such. There is no need to rehash arguments again and I’m wondering if we could all act like adults for just a moment and please not argue and piss and moan for once.

Please note curt did not ask for anything. Clam was the first to ask for Scott’s response in the steam room and others followed very quickly. Some of use would like to hear Scott say anything at all about this and since the people who want it are the people who actually post the most here and did not run off to form their own mock WD site, or stop posting for the most part to go elsewhere, or just stopped posting, why don’t these folks just go leave well enough alone. We never see many of you unless Curts or Darrens name is mentioned or there is some sort of argument or upheaval of some sort, so please leave us alone here if your only intention is to stir up a piss storm. For the folks who post here frequently, why do you have to argue with everyone all the time, why do you feel the need to do this? Why? Now, for any of you who are taking up open argument against anyone, could you please be civil for just a few days?

Oh, and as a side note (a pet peeve if you will), do not think for once that posting in the steam room or lounge alone makes you a supporter of this site. Perhaps if just a few of you actually were to post in the technical topics once in a while this silly ****e would not be happening. I don’t blame this on having a room to speak in about non tech topics. I blame it on those who have chosen to come here and not help in the technical forums. That is where camaraderie builds, the base members come from and if the majority of you condescended to help out there once in a while maybe people would have a little more respect for you once they got to the lounge or steam room.

We never see many of you unless Curts or Darrens name is mentioned or there is some sort of argument or upheaval of some sort, so please leave us alone here if your only intention is to stir up a piss storm. For the folks who post here frequently, why do you have to argue with everyone all the time, why do you feel the need to do this? Why? Now, for any of you who are taking up open argument against anyone, could you please be civil for just a few days?

Oh, and as a side note (a pet peeve if you will), do not think for once that posting in the steam room or lounge alone makes you a supporter of this site. Perhaps if just a few of you actually were to post in the technical topics once in a while this silly ****e would not be happening. I don’t blame this on having a room to speak in about non tech topics. I blame it on those who have chosen to come here and not help in the technical forums. I don't post in the tech forums(well, every now and then) because I do enough tech work at WORK. I come here to bull****(can't believe this word gets past the censor) with people who do the same kind of job I do. I'm sorry if in your narrow opinion that doesn't make me a member.

Curt was a nice enough guy when he wanted to be and to who he wanted to be. I'm not going to feel sorry for him because he left. It was his choice. I could give a rats behind what it was about. It all smells fishy.

Nice use of the implied "us" versus "them" in your post. "real members" versus "not real members" Great way to segregate yourself from the rest of the group. And they say there aren't clicks in WD. Phooey.

And why is it so gosh darn wrong that some of the members(oops, I guess I'm using that term too liberally) decided to start up their own site? Is it hurting you in some way? Is it being flaunted in WD as an alternative? Are the members there claiming superiority? No. It's an honest attempt to do some good. What's wrong with someone having a different vision and taking the time and effort to build it? They should be supported and not ridiculed.
