Honestly, it is this silly wenches own damn fault, and she deserves to have her credit rating screwed beyond belief. I've already added my comments to it (somewhere on page 15) but yeah, just felt like sharing.

That is some crazy stuff. I hope she sues their asses for every penny of that money and more...$9,000 for a little uploading, that's insane... :rolleyes:

Hell, it is in her terms of service. Its all there, in black and white.

The telco didnt put P2P software on her computer, SHE did. SHE downloaded / uploaded garbage. It is HER fault here.

This woman is just another demonstration of human ignorance.

And yeah, it is an expensive account. They have different levels of account, but basically, if you go over 300 meg on that one, you will be charged heaps.

To me its just another way Telstra has to rip off the unsuspecting Australian public

do you know if you have your own adsl modem you cant connect with them. you have to use the modem they supply on a 12 or 24 month contract at their exorborant charges..it sucks and spells monopoly in capital letters......

with my account which I paid 24 dollars a month for dialup and 300 mb transfer they would cut me off when i got to 300MB sort of lock the account until rollover..so we could then change to our back up ISP and use it up.....then one month without any warning what so ever they allowed the account to run and I got charged 180 in extra MB's and told us that they were doing it that way from now on....its all a big rip to get more money out of the little people..the problem is that here Telstra owns all the communications network just about and all the phone lines...so all other isp's have to buy their time off telstra...at the prices telstra wants to charge...which are exorborant at Monopoly prices

I don't understand why she or anybody who thinks that's wrong is ignorant or an idiot. I guess I must be ignorant and idiotic too then because i'm with you on this one too Jungleman. I think that company is ripping people off. $9000.00 for internet usage? That's absolutely insane! What does she have to show for her $9000.00 investment? Nothing. It's ridiculous that a company in today's high-tech world thinks they can still get away with crap like this. And btw, to say she's been ripped off is an understatement. She needs a lawyer and sue the hell out of that company.

Everyone installs and runs P2P software. It doesn't even matter what dangers can occur from P2P software because none of those happened to her (i.e. hacking, virus, etc.)

So anybody who leaves P2P running all the time is now considered ignorant? What happens when you're downloading a 1gb+ file over a slow dsl line? You're going to end up leaving that thing running over-night possibly. I'm just trying to figure out how a person is ignorant just because they're using the service they signed up for and pay monthly for. I mean, how is this considered ignorant, or uneducated, etc.?

She has no legal ground to stand on, none at all.
Maybe, maybe not. I think the legal grounds she has to stand on are this:
1) She's already paying $65.00 p/month for dsl service. What extra good or service is she paying for with the $9K? Where is the value for her money here?
2) Yes there was a service contract that she should've read more carefully. But imo, her isp shouldn't be collecting $9K for uploading files, the company that provides the p2p service should collect that money if anyone does.
3) Nobody is perfect, and we all make innocent mistakes. I think a court would sympathize and not make her pay that ludicrous amount.

I don't use p2p software... and Web, this is Australia, with australian laws, a monopoly on telephones... their system is a shambles.

Its been widely reported in Australia, this woman must have kept her head in the sand.

Yah its great to be in US were consumer power works, elsewhere it doesn't and it sucks!

PS the aussies even have dialup caps - they get charged for everything - upload and download - even the characters sent and received for a lowly irc connection...

I agree with Cameron that she should have been more careful but its wrong...so wrong on Telstra's behalf.
and Web..You cant shop around....in some areas telstra is all that is available and as they own the lines and stuff...any other isp buys off Telstra so it stands to reason that they are more expensive......

Loved it when I bought my last car. Got them down $2000 in ten minutes, and I had no trade in. Then I spent 2 1/2 hours reading and re-reading after I asked question every peace of paper they wanted me to sign. Turned what they thought would be a quick sale into a major headache for all of their guys. My dad who was with me left early when he realized what I was doing, he just laughed at the salesman and financial guys and told them to have a lot of fun.

As far as the ISP situation, she got nabbed. Sorry, it is because of people like her that we all sit around and make fun of all the warnings on everything. Heck, she even had it in her contract. Yeah, it sucks to be stuck having to deal with a monopoly, but we all deal with it with M$ everyday. She was charged as stated in her contract, if she sues, the judge should laugh her out of court. Just like what should have been done to the McDonalds coffee lady.

Ok guys, perhaps this needs to come to an end now? Your both entitled to your opinions and both of you are on the money in some respects with regard to the 'DSL Lady' but the personal insults aren't going to get us anywhere. If you feel the need to blow steam at each other, maybe PM is a better way to do it. No offence meant to either of you, just telling it the way I see it.

I do find it ironic that someone who had trouble getting through the easiest part of life can call everyone he comes across a moron for having a different opinion. That's my whole point. People make mistakes. This lady definatly made a mistake. No one is arguing that. She chose the wrong ISP. If the people at said ISP had any common decency they would have realized that this lady was less than tech savvy, given her notice, and let it slide.

On to other things...I didn't pick this fight. Not long ago I gave this boy some sound advice about spending money on cars and he didn't like it. So he makes me and everyone who ever would agree, out to be a moron.
