What to pack?/ Good Roadtrip Tunes?

Alright guys, my big @$$ vacation is just a week away. But im gonna need a little help deciding what to pack. Me, my GF and some buds are gonna be driving out west probly all the way to BC. We're taking one car so space is limited. I need advice on what's fun to have on a trip like this. We're probly gonna be doing some camping, maybe a little fishing but generally just lotsa outdoor stuff.

On a different note, (no pun intended) what is some good road trippin music? I'm gonna be borrowing my friends nomad so ill have 5 gigs of mp3 space, so i'm gonna need about a gig of recommendations to supplement my collection.

Also if you know of any good spots along the way that are worth hitting let me know.

Make sure you hit Banff AND Jasper National parks. Take Highway 93 from Banff to Jasper, the Columbia Icefield is on that road as well as some of the most spectacular scenery in Canada. Don't stay in the town of Jasper as it is EXTREMELY expensive this time of year. Don't bother with West Edmonton mall, it's highly overrated and is almost TOO big! Wells Gray Provincial Park in BC is very nice. There is good fishing pretty much everywhere. Pick up some local fishing maps and guides at the tourist info centres. If you have a chance, go over to Vancouver island and go to Pacific Rim national park. I have never been there but someday I will get out there to see what everyone is talking about. Make sure you have an automotive fire extinguisher in your car, I have seen some cars totally destroyed by a fire in the middle of nowhere - no fire department to help you out. Take some jugs of water for the radiator if things heat up. Cell phones don't work in a lot of remote areas in BC because of the mountains.

Anyway there's some advice, go out and have fun!

Thanks Mac i'll definitely hit Banff. Unfortunately, Girlfriend + Big Mall = Unavoidable (plus you have to factor in Money - Mall*GF = Time to go home).

No I alrady said there's not much room so the robot's gotta go (well if you wanna be technical it actually has to stay here.)

Also can you guys think of anything that would be cool to bring ya know like an iguana or a kite or something, anything normally you wouldn't think of taking in a million years.

As for the tunes just keep on listin' i'm taking very careful notes.

Take laptop and digital camera. Post the pictures every night and then it will be like we all had a vacation. I've never seen Canada. Hmmm, it might make you feel like you're working tho........

Sounds like a good idea except for the part where i dont have a digital camera or a laptop, dang. Plus I really have to avoid doing anything close to work.

However I will be putting my home system to good use in my absence. It'll be a CS server.

Think about taking a break from music, take a couple of Henry Rollins CD's like Human Bu$$. These are the ones where he discusses his years on the road, in the band, etc. Makes for a break from music, and is funny/revealing/serious/funny some more. Of course you have ZZ Top, right?

More good comedy, check out Bill Hicks, he's hysterical. Chris Rock is fun in the car too.

I dont know what to tell you since I dont know what you listen to. What I can recommend is that you dont bring too much of one thing music wise, variety is the spice!

if your gonna hit any national parks I would recommend back packs. some of the trails to the places you go might be a bit long.

That's good advice unfortuneatly the people i'm going with are rather, hmm.... whats the word im looking for... Lethargic. But i'll definitely got lotsa pics and if any turn out good ill post them.

the Blueman Group is a great road cd - no singing what so ever and has that harmonic "as the guard rails go by" rythem!

Roadtrip tunes?

Well, Steppenwolf's "Born To Be Wild" is almost mandatory.

Nothing quite like tooling down the highway with the windows down and some Jimi Hendrix blaring over the stereo. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

Or if you have a sports car, some Jan & Dean, Beach Boys, or Dick Dale would be good.

If you want an album that'll keep you going for a long time, the Who's "Tommy" or "Quadrophenia" or Pink Floyd's "The Wall" are some good long ones. ELO's "Time" or "Eldorado" and Boston's "Third Stage" work pretty well too, though they are a bit more sedate.

If you want something fun and entertaining, you can't go wrong with Weird Al or one of the Dr. Demento albums. Spike Jones, Tom Lehrer, and older They Might Be Giants stuff (Apollo 18 especially) are good choices too, depending on your tastes.

On the other hand, if you're looking for something more sedate to keep you from killing other drivers, "Best of Bee Gees" Vols 1 & 2, the Byrd's "Fifth Dimension", or just about anything by Simon & Garfunkle are a good choice. (Good ol' S&G kept me from going insane when I had to completely rebuild my server at 4 a.m. a couple years ago)

For a very long trip, consider The Hobbit and/or the Lord of the Rings radio adaptations. It's about 15 hours long for the two of them!

Music - Iron Maiden for the road.
As to computers - when on trip/vacation i never use them.

I'd have to agree with the Captain on this one. Any Pink Floyd album would be great. There are plenty of good songs to put you to sleep, or to keep you interested. You can sit there and try to decypher some lyrics, or even better, play the "what drug was he on when he came up with this" game. That's one of my favs.
