Mick
Cool! I got it downloaded and installed too.
so there is no way to change the colors fo rthe start tab without downloading a 5 MB file?
thanks by the way.
that program doesn't allow you to change just the start button.
I want to make my own color button not use a theme.

Damn Curt. I thought I got him!
acutally you can download tgtsoft's other program style builder and you can actually make your own theme. or you can simply edit the start button, i.e change the background of the button.
kinda complicated but it is easy once you get the hang of it...
and for your newbies with XP, a great site to get sweet themes for your XP MACHINE try
Theme XP.org
also has some sweet backgrounds
To change just the color of the start button you can go desktop-->properties--->apperance--->windows and buttons and change it to classic style. That gives the ability to change the start button, desktop or taskbar colors like 98 had.

I tried that and when in classic mode then what do you do .
Right now I have a green start button with a silver taskbar I want to change the green to silver.
If I change to classic mode both turn grey.
On the same note, i downloaded a cool program called resource hacker( there was a link to it on www.thescrensavers.com ) it allows you to open explorer.exe and change the text on the start button... and unlike 9x you can use more than 5 characters... mine says CS Computers and it is huge..... but personal...
heres a link
http://rpi.net.au/~ajohnson/resourcehacker/

I got ResHack...now how do I change the text on the start menu...
Since no one else has mentioned it, there is one caveat with StyleXp... it's shareware and costs $20 if you want to continue using it after 30 days. I run XP in classic mode so for me it's somewhat of a moot point, but even if I didn't it seems to me that's far too much for a simple desktop enhancement utility.
Hey Danimal...is this what you had in mind?

ya that's the Idea, which program did you use to make that?
not style XP that program has nothing for the start button only.
Ulead PhotoImpact...Versions 5,6,7 all have design tools to do buttons, and any other web graphics. You can use templates [which is the quick way I did that sample] or you can build them from scratch with a design tool. [BTW, all the "rollover" tools are in there, too]
Full install program...less than a hundred bucks.
[I have V 5 uninstalled and not in use...if you want my old copy I can drop it in the mail...there'd be no legality problems, It's legally paid for, and not in use....Although, I would recommend getting 7.0...even more geared for web and GUI applications.]
I use the program equally for web component design and digital image enhancement. I've also made a slew of homemade icons, so buttons shouldn't be a problem, as long as you know where to find/replace them in the OS files.

Len...
I would love to have that program or pay you for it if you still do not want it anymore or if Danimal doesn't want that... I like making small graphics for stuff and that would be fantastic.
Let me know.
Thanks

Not yet, but I'll look...I've been there before, just can't remember what I did to get there. If/when I find the link, I'll post it for you...assuming I can locate it again. [It's been since last November since I accessed it..]

No problem. I'll give Danimal a while to decide if he needs it [since I offered it to him first]. If you can remind me with a pm in a couple of weeks or so, and the program is still available, I'll get your snail mail addr, and ship if off to you.
HERE is a link to the hack that will allow you to change your start button. :D

It worked great for me, though I hate playing with the system files like that. ;) :D
Thanks again.
I hear that.....I didn't mod my start button any more than what style XP did. I guess if you think about it, all that Style XP is is a GUI for the very same thing that you just did. Oh well, I'm just happy that I have something different. :D

ya at the bottom of your link the guy actually says to download style xp to change the color of the button.
the only thing style xp doesn't do is change the word and the shape of the button.
