Wierd Ghost problem.
I just Ghosted my 4 GIG xp drive using Norton 2002 ghost to a 10 GIG HD.
Everything seemed fine.
So I disconect my 4 gig and make my 10 gig master to the cdrom on 1 ide cable.
When I boot up it getts to the win xp splash screen where it's supposed to ask you to log in but it just hangs ther and shows no options to log in with either me or my wife, (like the original drive had)
So I connect my 4 gig to a seperate IDE cable and leave the 10gig and cdrom alone.
And it boots up and works fine
the 4 gig is on the secondary master
this shouldn't work, I need the 10 gig drive to boot up as c drive so I can format the 4 gig. since they bot have hte same info on them.
any Ideas.
Also both drives are fat 32 and were ghosted disk to disk

could windows require the installation of drivers for the hdd? try booting from your 4 gig with your 10 gig plugged in., then try booting of the 10 gig.

You can create Bootable XP floppies within the Floppy Drive format section in My Computer/Explorer :)

ghost 2002 gives the option of creating a boot disk on the start menu ,,,it uses PCdos , then as u boot from it it also gives u the option of a bootable cd.
i have used 2002 (and apart from the silly p/word querk) i find it better than earlier versions.
now unles your other drive is SCSI , i cannot see where u are having probs.
the worst senario i have when ghosting from 1 drive to another (evaluating different drives - on loan) is that it occasionally spits and runs scandisk.

OK,
I am still at a loss for why this is happening.
but I will explain this the best I can.
Right now as I type out this message my 10 GIG maxtor is set as primary master alone onit's own ide cable in the first IDE 1 on the motherboard. And the 4 gig Fujitsu is master with the CDrom slaved on ide 2.(this would mean I am booting to the 10 gig and if I remove the 4 gig it does not boot past the windows welcome screen)
when I open my computer I see the 2 drives which I named (C:)WIN XP(4 gig) and (D:)WIN XP 10 (10 gig)to distinguise the two with out checking the properties...
right now winXP drive is C:
and WIN XP 10 is D:
I have the cmos set to boot to c: and everything works.
if I change it to boot to d: it hangs atthe windows xp welcome screen.
If I check the administration tools in computer managment, and click the disk management line it shows
Disk 0-WIN XP 10 (d:)
healthy (System)
and then
Disk-1-WIN XP (C:)
Healthy (Page File)
this is wierd now it shows a blue square in a legend at the bottom indicating primary partion, and both disk 0 and dsik 1 have a blue line shoing that they are both Primary partition.
In that same window I can change the driver letters for the win XP c: drive but not the winXP 10 drive it sats that " windows cannot modify the drive letter of your system volume or boot volume. Reading that It tells me that it is booted to the WIN XP 10 d: drive
**** I think I said that right.
Oh btw the whole problem is that I want to format the c drive but if I do then I cannot boot the pc.

ok , remove the 4 gig completly from the system (so you always have a backup) ,,,start xp on your big drive , and try a: safe mode b: last known configeration c: vga mode (if there is one on xp) if none f those get u in then start from cd-rom and ty repair (r) , if that still dont let u in then start from c-rom , pass "r" and go to setup , it will hen find your prev setup and delete some files then d a re-load.
try that , letus know.

all the other thigns did nothing.

quote: "no matter what I do it will not boot to CD" ,,,,why not? presumably u have an ide cd-rom? them it SHOULD be a simple matter of going in the bios and setting it to cd-rom , h/disk(0) h/disk(1) floppy etc , if u cannot get this to work then you have another prob ,which could be related to your prob at the moment.

Had the exact same issue myself on both XP & 2K upon ghosting. I figured it has something to do with XP/2K assigning each vloume with a unique identity which will still make original C: , the system drive regardless of other devices in the system.
If you do figure a way round this (I couldn't after god knows how many attempts, in the end I just wiped & reinstalled), make sure that you post it here. I couldn't find anything regarding this on the MSKB or Technet.

have just ghosted , with 2002 from a a 20g maxtor to a 30 odd g ibm both using a image on a cd-r and a direct clone , it stalled on me so i ran "r" and it fixed , if this problem is affecting u darren and other people then there should/would have been a recall/update on the product

As XP has not got a recovery procedure (only a recovery console) you cannot run an automated repair on it.

This worked when I came across a similar problem with W2K; I assume it should work in XP:

When I first started using Ghost 2002 I had the same problem occur. It only seems to happen with some configs. I think what I did was put both the hard drives as on the same cable and set them master, slave. I then reset the bios. After that it worked. However, if all you want to do is boot from the 10gb and format the 4gb as ntfs can't you just fdisk the the 4gb when it is in the computer alone(also fdisk mbr) and then have XP format it from windows? If this fails low level format the 4gb.

If you are having problems booting from the CD, make sure under "Standard CMOS Setup" all of the drives are set to "Auto" if any are set to "None", the PC very well can't boot off of something it doesn't know is there. Even if you have the PnP enabled.
