They put it in windows update - see my post in tech tips... <a href="http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum3/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=15;t=000527" target="_blank">here</a>
Agreed, except its gone from windows update now. which is why i'm so traumatized...
It hasn't it just thinks that it is all installed and hunky dory.... which is why its a bad move...
It is my understanding that Microsoft is no longer licensed by Sun to distribute Java.
following this logic, how might it be possible to modify my update history, thereby convincing xp that it has never recieved this update?
hmmm. it is not available at the corporate download site either...
OK that's wierd, QT said it was.... Mebbe M$ lost some battle over it?
Edit: snigger...

Edit: thats very old news, I should look at the dates... I cannot find any recent links about MS removing VM...
I found this posted on the main page of <a href="http://www.xp-erience.org." target="_blank">www.xp-erience.org.</a> Keep in mind that no source is provided, so I have no idea how reliable the story is:
Microsoft Attempt To Kill Java...
When WindowsXP initially shipped, Microsoft decided not to ship it without the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine. Many webpages still used Java applets and therefore Microsoft posted the Java Virtual Machine to WindowsUpdate making the 5meg update optional.
Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, have now removed the Java Virtual Machine from Windowsupdate and yet many pages still use java and will redirect you to Microsoft if you do not have the Java Virtual Machine installed - in turn Microsoft will tell you that the Java Virtual Machine is no longer available.
Why have Microsoft decided to do this? Only they know, but we have decided to post this news story with a link to the Java Virtual Machine (thanks ZipTriX) so that you can view Java webpages correctly.
Ha that's funny, the link on that page to the MS virtual machine is d.o.a. mrwilhelm.
I have been scouring MS's site all day and you cannot get it from them at all.
So I guess its true, XP's virtual machine is a gonner.
This p1sses me off so much, why can't Microshaft take it in stride that someone else on planet earth might create a technology that people like and want. Java rocks, and it is not going to go away, so why do they have to be d1cks and prevent XP users from enjoying it? Jealousy? what is it?
Uncle Bill, if you're reading this; GROW UP!!
It doesn't surprise me that the link to the Microsoft page is dead. At least you can still get Java directly from Sun.
As far as Gates acting like a child in this regard, wasn't it Sun and McNealy who bought Star Office then turned around and gave it away apparently just to spite Microsoft?
It seems that both Gates and McNealy act like a couple of five year olds when it comes to each other. Pretty sad.
heh. i don't know why i got so emotional over this... oh well, no mas datek streamer for me...
<a href="http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1104-944065.html" target="_blank">ok, here it is from a reliable source</a>, in case you missed the link on the home page...
Looks like it is as much SUN's fault as it is Uncle Bill too.
According to <a href="http://www.xp-erience.org" target="_blank">www.xp-erience.org</a> ,VM has re-appeared on the Windows Update site. One has to assume that Sun and Microsoft have reached some sort of accord regarding this issue, but who knows how long it will last, so go get it while it's hot! :)
And this is progress !!?? Xp is soooo slow compared to 9x and I get virtual memory errors with creatives soft ware, Progress MY BUTT !!!
IN order to dload VM, you need to use windows update, set your preferences to show update catalog, then do a search for "java". you will find the right download for virtual machine.
Yup, NooNoo, this is how I reinstalled the VM update.Quote:

Actually, if you are looking for specific updates, you can goto
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog
and get any specific ones you want.

been having trouble with this myself, thanks for the links, never could get the JAVA from SUN to work with some of the applets though :(
but microsoft vm works fine now :D
It all has to do with the Sun vs. Microsoft lawsuit. Microsoft made a Windows only version of Java which broke the licensing agreement with Sun. Sun won the suit and Microsoft was stuck using an older version of the VM (one that was still cross-platform compatible). Microsoft decided to break the new agreement by not shipping the VM with XP and still offering their non-cross-platform VM through Windows Update. This again broke the new agreement. Now Sun is suing for real.
